UPCOMING EVENTS
CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK
Friday & Saturday, Dec. 13 & 14, 6-9 PM
Come watch Doug and Fr. Ben stand outside freezing. Also, it's a good time to see a great display of the lights and sounds of the season as we prepare for the celebration of our Lord's birth.
CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKETS
Saturday, Dec. 14, 8:30 AM
At the coming of Christ, we learned that he came not to be served but to serve, and the Christmas Food Basket program is one way in which we honor that message. Saturday morning, December 14, some will gather to fill boxes with food for those in need in our community and then we will send others out with that food as a witness to love and service which we see in our Lord. If you have the time, join us at the Rolland Lewis Building beginning around 8:30 a.m.
CHRISTMAS SWEATERS & TREATS
Sunday, Dec. 15
Wear your favorite/ugliest Christmas sweater to church on December 15 and bring your favorite holiday treat to share, and we'll have a good time of fun, food, and fellowship.
HANGING OF THE GREENS
Sunday, Dec. 22, following the service
After church on December 22, we'll deck the halls, walls, windows, rails, and anything else to which we can attach greens. At the same time, we'll invite the kids to decorate the Christmas tree in the Parish Hall.

SCRIPTURE LESSONS
Hear, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest
December 8, 2019 - Advent 2, Year A
The Collect: Second Sunday of Advent
Merciful God, who sent thy messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
The Lesson: Isaiah 11:1-10
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall feed; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The sucking child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day the root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious.
The Psalm: 72:1-8
1 Give the King your justice, O God, * and your righteousness to the King's son;
2 That he may rule your people righteously * and the poor with justice.
3 That the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, * and the little hills bring righteousness.
4 He shall defend the needy among the people; * he shall rescue the poor and crush the oppressor.
5 He shall live as long as the sun and moon endure, * from one generation to another.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown field, * like showers that water the earth.
7 In his time shall the righteous flourish; * there shall be abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more.
8 He shall rule from sea to sea, * and from the River to the ends of the earth.
The Epistle: Romans 15:4-13
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God’s truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will praise thee among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name”; and again it is said, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people”; and again, “Praise the Lord, all Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him”; and further Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse shall come, he who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
The Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12
In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair, and a leather girdle around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit that befits repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

COLLECT OF THE DAY
December 5: Clement of Alexandria
O God of unsearchable wisdom, who didst give thy servant Clement grace to understand and teach the truth as it is in Jesus Christ, the source of all truth: Grant to thy Church the same grace to discern thy Word wherever truth is found; through Jesus Christ our unfailing light, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
