Happy Birthday to IRIS!

We turned five years old on Jan. 1, and we're looking forward to continued growth for the next five (and more)! With member institutions that account for nearly one-third of total federal research and development spending, the IRIS UMETRICS dataset is a valuable resource for explaining, understanding, and improving the public value of research and higher education.

IRIS Workshop: Joining the Data Revolution: Big Data in Education and Social Science Research, June 15-19

Join IRIS in Ann Arbor this summer for a week-long workshop on how to leverage big data resources and tools to advance your education and social science (ESS) research.

This is an introductory-level course aimed at researchers in education and social science fields who are interested in gaining experience working with large-scale restricted-use data. No prior experience in quantitative data analysis is required. Datasets on topics including post-secondary educational opportunities, employment outcomes, and the makeup of research teams will be featured in the workshop.

Participants will acquire skills that will enable them to pursue external funding for ESS research using big data.

VDE, portal outage for server replacement scheduled for Jan. 22

The IRIS portal, virtual data enclave and website will be down all day January 22 due to replacement of IRIS servers. Two new servers will replace the current 5-year-old servers; the new servers will also be placed in a new room with better air circulation in University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research building.

The two new servers will have 512 GB of RAM each; a combined 16 core processors with speeds of 3.5 Ghz; and a combined 16 TB of storage on solid state drives (SSD). The current servers have about 4.5 TB of storage on hard drives, approximately 70% of which is used. The new drives will enable faster access to the data on the servers for researchers and members.

Once the new servers are installed, virtual servers with IRIS data will be switched over. It should be a seamless transition.

The outage on January 22 is expected to last all day.
