Wentz and Turner to be honored by American Association of Geographers

Whether it’s finding ways to make cities more livable, or studying how human activity impacts the natural world, geographic research at Arizona State University explores nearly every aspect of our lives.

Next spring, the contributions of two scholars with the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning will be recognized with an induction into the American Association of Geographers (AAG) fellows.

The AAG announced 18 new fellows for its 2020 cohort in November, including Elizabeth Wentz, dean of social sciences at The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and professor in SGSUP, and Billie Lee Turner, a Regents Professor and Gilbert F. White Professor of Environment and Society in SGSUP. They are joined by Anne Chin, a doctoral alumna of SGSUP who is now a geography and environmental sciences professor at the University of Colorado, Denver.

Established in 2018, the fellows program recognizes a handful of outstanding geography professionals from a pool of thousands of AAG members each year. Fellows are chosen for making significant advancements to the field through research, teaching and development and become lifetime appointees of the association’s advisory board.

Wentz and Turner will now join others from SGSUP as AAG fellows, including Patricia Gober, Anthony Brazel and Martin Pasqualetti.

New research: Satellite system can map tropical forest carbon emissions

For the first time, scientists have developed a method to monitor carbon emissions from tropical forests with an unprecedented level of detail. The approach will provide the basis for developing a rapid and cost-effective operational carbon monitoring system, making it possible to quantify the economic cost of deforestation as forests are converted from carbon sinks to sources. The study was published in Scientific Reports on Nov. 28, 2019.

Researchers at the Arizona State University Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (GDCS) worked with satellite imagery from Planet Inc., an Earth-imaging company based in San Francisco, to develop maps of carbon stocks and emissions for Peru by combining millions of hectares of airborne laser measurements of canopy height with thousands of high resolution Planet Dove satellite images.

“Our study powerfully demonstrates a new capability to not only measure forest carbon stocks from space, but far more critically, to monitor changes in carbon emissions generated by a huge range of activities in forests,” said Greg Asner, director of GDCS and professor in SGSUP. “The days of mapping forests based simply on standing carbon stocks are behind us now. We are focused on carbon emissions, and that’s precisely what is needed to mitigate biodiversity loss and climate change.”
