Welcome to the December issue of the Contours Holidays newsletter, and the last one of 2019! It’s beginning to feel rather festive here in the Contours office, though there is still plenty to do before Santa Claus pays us a visit!

In this month’s newsletter, Beth Pipe returns with her favourite Christmas-time walks, and we also have some great trail diaries by Catherine Sempill, Mark Richards, and our very own director, Karen Simons. We also have the results of our annual photo competition to announce, plus plenty of competitions and other exciting news to keep you busy until the new year. Thanks for reading, and Merry Christmas!

Five Fabulous
Turkey Toddles

By Beth Pipe

We all know the feeling. Christmas lunch has been devoured and we’re all sprawling peacefully when some bright spark suggests a walk.

hiker

Tempting as it may be to wallow in your pit of sprouty bliss, a few miles in the fresh air will do you a world of good, and give you the perfect excuse to polish off a cheeseboard and half a tin of Quality Street in the evening.

90 Miles Outside
my Comfort Zone

By Mark Richards

“Do you want to come for a walk?”

“With the dog? No, I’ve got an essay to write.”

hiker

“No,” I said to my youngest son. “Not with the dog. Further than that. About 80 miles on the Pennine Way. It’ll take us five days. In your summer holidays.”

“Sure,” he said. “Why not?” And then he turned to what’s really important to a teenage boy. “What’s for dinner?”

Walking the Wye
Valley Short Break

By Karen Simons

This summer, I decided to check our route notes for the Circular Wye Valley Short Break between Monmouth and Chepstow.

hiker

The outward leg of this circular trail follows the Offa’s Dyke Path north from Chepstow, but it was the return route running south from Monmouth that I chose to walk, marked in red on the map to the right.

One Day on the
West Highland Way

By Catherine Sempill

I had come to Scotland looking for someplace wild. England is lovely, with its rolling farmlands and pretty gardens, but the south east doesn’t have much of an edge.

hiker

Scotland, I’d heard, is the polar opposite — unforgiving weather, grizzly mountains, exposed moorlands. It sounded like the kind of place I needed to visit, a place that would make me feel small and forget about life’s trivialities for a bit.
