Next week: Colloquium with Natalie Koch

Join us next week on Dec. 2 for the next presentation in our series as we welcome Natalie Koch, Associate Professor of Geography and O’Hanley Faculty Scholar at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, as she presents her talk "Arid entanglements: Arizona, Arabia and the geopolitics of deserts."

About the talk:
In 2014, the largest dairy company in the Middle East, Almarai, purchased a farm near Vicksburg, Arizona. The Saudi company is now growing alfalfa there and shipping it back to their headquarters at Al Kharj farms, where it has a herd of more than 160,000 milk cows just outside of Riyadh. Why is a Saudi company investing in farmland in Arizona? And why does Saudi Arabia have such a large dairy industry? Further, given that dairy and alfalfa farms both require an immense amount of water to maintain, why are these developments happening in the deserts of Arizona and Arabia?

The answers are historical and contemporary and by considering them together, this talk explores a geopolitics of connection that has long defined the two places – dating to the early 1940s, when a team of Arizona farmers led by David A. Rogers helped to establish Al Kharj as Saudi Arabia’s first large-scale experiment in commercial farming in the desert, and when two Saudi royal family visits came to see Arizona farming operations in 1943 and
1947.

By exploring these arid entanglements – past and present – Koch offers an approach to “desert geopolitics” that shows how current ties linking Arizona and the Arabian Peninsula are rooted in legal geographies around water resources in both places, agricultural subsidies and food security policies, as well as longstanding geographic imaginaries that spectacularize desert farming projects.

New publication: "Manual of Digital Earth"

About the book: This open access book offers a summary of the development of Digital Earth over the past twenty years. By reviewing the initial vision of Digital Earth, the evolution of that vision, the relevant key technologies, and the role of Digital Earth in helping people respond to global challenges, this publication reveals how and why Digital Earth is becoming vital for acquiring, processing, analyzing and mining the rapidly growing volume of global data sets about the Earth.

This publication was co-edited by Michael Goodchild, research professor with SGSUP, and has a chapter that was co-authored by Patricia Solis, executive director for the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience at ASU.
