VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP SLOW OAKLAND REACH OUT TO THE COMMUNITY!

On Saturday Dec 14 and Sunday Dec 15 WOBO is hitting the streets to gather support for the Slow Oakland campaign in neighborhoods around The Town.  We'll be raising awareness of the dangers posed to cyclists and pedestrians by speeding vehicles, taking pledges to drive slower, and handing out goodies.

Let us know if you can help:
  • Saturday 12/14 10am-1pm (Grand Lake Farmers Market & nearby parks), or
  • Sunday 12/15 1pm - 4pm (Foothill starting @ Fruitvale)

We need your help to make this happen - please contact us if you're interested!

OAKDOT'S WORK TO IMPROVE SAFETY AT DEADLY EAST OAKLAND INTERSECTION

We are deeply saddened by the crashes that killed and seriously injured members of our community on Foothill (and any street, really). City of Oakland's Department of Transportation (OakDOT) has hastened to make additional changes to Foothill Boulevard, which is known to strike fear among school children, parents, and neighbors on this roadway.

We are assured that OakDOT and other city departments are working together to improve this corridor.  We understand more improvements are on the way.

In the next few months, WOBO will be strategizing with community groups, schools, and our City's leaders to ensure streets throughout Oakland prioritize safety, especially for our most vulnerable community members.

New hardened centerlines and signage at Foothill and 22nd is intended to slow cars going through the intersection, especially when making turns.  OakDOT has also extended the red "No Parking" curb (below) to improve visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

RICHMOND-SAN RAFAEL BRIDGE BIKE LANE OPENING RECAP

On November 16 hundreds of dedicated cyclists turned out to celebrate the opening of the bike lane across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.  This opening has been coming for decades and the mood that foggy morning was festive.  "It's like the Richmond Bridge is opened for the first time ever, for everyone without a car," one attendee said.  KPIX agreed: “Wow were there a lot of smiles out here today!”

Many of those present began the morning at the Richmond BART station before biking en masse to the opening ceremony.  Let's help make the RSR Bridge bike lane this popular every day!
