Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez, DFTA Commissioner
A Message from the Commissioner:

This year, we have worked hard to meet the growing needs of older New Yorkers and, in doing so, set some records along the way! Here are a few of my favorite highlights from 2019:
  • DFTA’s home-delivered meals providers delivered a record or 4,554,828 meals to homebound older New Yorkers.
  • Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities, often referred to as NORCS, had the highest participation ever in health promotion programming, with a total annual attendance of 77,797.
  • DFTA-funded senior centers served a record number of 29,726 average daily participants.
What would you like to see in 2020? Send me a message.

Until next month,
Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez
Commissioner of the NYC Department for the Aging
    Coming Up:
  • 'Tis the season of giving — blood. You can find a blood center near you by visiting New York Blood Center (here).
  • Do you have a Christmas tree in your home? Make sure to place the tree at least three feet away from heating system air registers, fireplaces, and other heat sources.
    Did You Know?
  • Nearly 50% of older New Yorkers speak a language other than English in the home.
  • The percentage of older adults below the Federal Poverty Level in 2017 was twice as great in New York City compared with the national level (18.0% versus 9.3%).
  •  In 2017, New York City women had a life expectancy of 83.6 years, while men had an average life expectancy of 78.5 years.

Older Adults in Your City

Survivor Leaders Ava, Monica, Joan, and Sandra from Sanctuary for Families / Gibney Dance performed at the closing 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence event. Held at Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, the event was hosted by DFTA, the NYC Mayor’s Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence and the NYC Commission on Gender Equity to raise awareness for gender-based violence and elder abuse.

Many older adults are afraid to report incidents of elder abuse, because those inflicting the abuse may be family members, caretakers or significant others. Only 1 in 24 cases are reported to a social services provider or law enforcement.

These stats were brought to life through the Survivor Leader's stories. "It's so hard to fathom a person that professes to love you with one voice, and is hurting you at the same time," said Sandra, as she expressed her painful experience through movement on stage.

If you or someone you know is a victim of elder abuse, call 311 to reach DFTA’s community-based elder abuse programs.
