The Broomstacker debuts

Welcome to the 2019-20 season! We are excited to deliver to you the first edition of The Broomstacker, the official e-newsletter of the Stevens Point Curling Club. The newsletter will hopefully keep members up to date on happenings around the club as well as opportunities for volunteering and bonspieling! We hope you will enjoy!

Press conference set

Join us at the club at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, for the official press conference to announce the new Curling Center.  As you know, Sentry will have naming rights thanks to their $1.5 million pledge.  As of this writing, CEO and President Pete McParland is planning to attend.  Ann Lucas from the Sentry Foundation and their Marketing department is helping us prepare.  Plover Village Administrator Dan Mahoney will also be there.

It would be wonderful if as many of you can join us for this milestone event.  We have plans for some UWSP players to get out on the ice and provide some good visuals, but we may need some help with that so please join us for this historical moment!

Sunday U-5 League continues to grow

This season the Sunday U-5 league has started with the most teams to begin a season in its three-year existence. We have nine teams with two full draw times and a team on bye each week. We'll have room to add up to three more teams after the winter learn to curls. We retained a large portion of our Sunday night curlers form last season and a few have moved on since they are no longer under 5 years experience.  We have 11 brand new to SPCC curlers in the league this season and 5 returning who curled the second half of last season after the winter learn to curls.

Draw times on Sunday are 4:30 and 6:15 and will expand to a third draw time at 8 p.m. if warranted after the winter learn to curls.

The league continues to provide and foster an excellent learning and growth opportunity for those new to the sport.  A big thank you to all the Sunday night returning curlers who help teach the game to new curlers not just on their team but in the league.  And a special thank you to Matt Weiss who had the idea 3 seasons ago to start a U-5 league and help get folks interested in the sport.  If Matt had not come up with the idea and put into motion we wouldn't be where we are today with our league.

Next Friday Mini League starts Dec. 13

This season Friday Night League got a revamp with the introduction of mini leagues -- five-week sessions focused on traditional curling and mixed doubles. The first mini session currently has seven teams competing with the hopes of growing bigger! Our hope is to have a full mixed doubles league when we move to the new club so the more who are willing to experience this new discipline, the better!

Session 2, mixed doubles (Dec. 13-Jan. 10): Sign up with a partner or we will assign one to you! There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board at the club or you can email the league chairs (Terry Davis, Matt Davis) directly regarding your intent. Want to learn more about mixed doubles curling? Click here to watch a YouTube video.

Session 3, traditional curling (Jan. 24-Feb. 21) : We switch back to traditional curling for five weeks. Sign up as a full team or we can add you to a team.

Session 4, mixed doubles (Feb. 28-March 27): Did you miss out on the first session of mixed doubles? Don't worry, there's a second chance!

Corporate Event
The curling club will be hosting a corporate event for Sentry on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. We are in need of help with instructing to assure an excellent experience for all who attend. If interested in helping out or finding out more, please contact Sandra Kawleski at sandcurls2@gmail.com.
What's on tap
In case you haven't noticed, the club beer taps have been flowing this season with a rotating selection of a darker stout or porter on one tap and an IPA or some other variety on the other tap. Prices are $3 a cup or $10 a pitcher. If a barrel kicks while you are at the club, you can email beer@pointcurling (yes, that's a real email address) to let us know which one kicked so we can get the next one flowing.
The Stevens Point team of (above, l-r) Elijah Grajkowski (lead), Chase Haferman (skip), Oliver Lind (second) and Carson Yenter (vice skip) competed at the Eau Claire Junior Bonspiel Nov. 1-3.

Submitted by Jason Tree

The Little Rocks season officially began on Sunday, Nov. 10, this year. However, the week before we had two youth teams compete in the Eau Claire Junior Bonspiel in the U-14 division. Both teams curled well and had a great time at the event. Then on the weekend of Nov. 16-17 we had one team represent the club in the developmental division at the Wausau Junior Bonspiel. Practices are held Sunday afternoons from 2-4 p.m.

This year we lost a few members who aged out into the high school curling program but we picked up three kids who aged out of the Kids Curl program as well as a couple youth joining us as new curlers. We currently have around 12 participants.

We are also very fortunate this year to welcome a new member to our instructor/coaching team -- Alyson Wiedenbeck. Alyson is originally from Racine, Wis., where she curled, studied and got her undergraduate degree at UW-Eau Claire where she was a member of the curling club and helped grow their youth curling program. This year Alyson is doing her masters at the UWSP and while she does not have time to curl in a league herself, she approached us to be part of our junior program. We are grateful for coaching and instruction experience she has brought to the program.
Our events:
Jan. 17-19, WinterFest
Feb. 7-9, Women's Bonspiel
March 6-8, Men's Bonspiel
March 27-29, Mixed Bonspiel
