PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SCWCA members and friends,
This has been such an exciting and eventful year on so many levels. It was electrifying to see so many members at our annual meeting at the Contemporary Craft participating in elections and planning for 2020. Your voices are important and we hear you.
We began the year with new opportunities to connect with our fellow artists at our Art Matters brunch and art share at members’ homes. These events have been so well received and we will be continuing throughout the coming year. They are a chance to share artwork, ideas and create lasting relationships. The calendar is filling up fast, so if you are interested in hosting, please email me at shelleyheffler@gmail.com.
Throughout 2019, there were several opportunities for our members and these included the following:
- In January, we began the year with a day-long retreat led by Cathy Salser where much of our planning for the past year occurred.
- Early in 2019, many of our members contributed images for a chapter flag designed by Danielle Eubank for the WCA 2019 Conference.
- Several members created postcards for a WCA exhibition at the A.I.R. Gallery in New York.
- There was an Eco-art meet up and walk-through of Danielle Eubank's exhibition at Kwan Fong Gallery on Cal Lutheran Campus this summer.
- We participated in a community collaboration with Pasadena’s Boston Court Theatre and several of our members attended their production of the play, The Ladies.
- We toured the downtown L.A. Library.
- Linda Roletti led a felting workshop at SoLA Gallery.
- Gloria’s Call was directed by Cheri Gaulke and produced by Cheryl Bookout, Anne Gauldin, Cheri Gaulke, Christine Papalexis and Sue Maberry. The film is about Gloria Orenstein and was funded in part by SCWCA. It continues to receive many accolades and awards at Independent Film Festivals. For more information: Gloriascall.com
- Members attended a dinner and lively discussion at the USC Hillel Art Gallery with guest authors Judith K. Brodsky and Ferris Olin about their book titled Junctures in Women's Leadership.
- SCWCA member Nancy Spiller led a wonderful workshop titled “Words and Pictures” which helped our artist members to create the dialogue for talking about their art.
Our exhibition calendar this past year included, Unfettered at Avenue 50 Studio, the annual PULSE of LA at SoLA Gallery juried and curated by Holly Tempo and the all member exhibition #ENOUGH at the Neutra Institute Gallery & Museum. More to come next year.
Still upcoming this year is the Nancy Turner studio visit and our end of year celebration. Our board is already planning for next year with an Art Matters event in January.
I want to remind you about our Member Gallery (thanks to Cheryl Bookout and Ann Isolde) which provides a space for your art on our website and is one of the many benefits of membership. Please renew your membership today to stay involved in our lively organization. I'm looking forward to seeing you at the end of year celebration at Bergamont Station.

2020 Conference in Chicago
Join us in Chicago for the WCA’s conference Intersectionality, February 13–16 at Columbia College. Conference sessions will include Chapters’ Council and Caucus meetings, workshops and panels, and networking opportunities. Included in the registration are our two exhibition receptions. She is available to help if you're feeling stuck in your studio practice, need help fine tuning your artist statement or could use the input of a mentor for any other reason. Cathy Salser is seeking individuals to join her in a personal, interactive journey, using the art process to heal from "the legacy of trauma." Cathy is the founder of A Window Between Worlds, an organization that blends art making into the healing process of abuse survivors. She describes her current project as a 30-month durational art piece that will incorporate facilitated in-person workshops and a private Facebook group. Participants will use "touchstones" (small, meaningful, personal creations) "as a resource for healing and change-making in the face of trauma." Workshops are available in December. Eye on Art

Sarah Stone creates colorful images using traditional painting and illustration techniques. Her work features the plants and animals of the Santa Monica mountains and Southern California. It will be on exhibit and for sale at the Santa Monica Mountains Interagency Visitor Center.

Bonnie J. Smith's Indigo 2-piece dress was selected for the Allegany Arts Council A Stitch To Wear: Wearable Art Exhibition. The fabric was hand dipped and wood resist was used in the fabric design. Sashiko stitching was used both on the skirt and top.
The Arts Council is located at 9 N. Center Street, Cumberland, MD. Hours are Monday thru Saturday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. There will be a
juror talk by Renate Maile-Moskwowitz and opening reception on December 7, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

SCWCA MEMBER GALLERY —

The featured artist for the Member Gallery this month is Suzanne Pratt (see the Venja paper installation above). Her art is primarily a harnessing of light but is also a celebration of routine. The compositions privilege structures where there is no end or beginning. Some play with symmetry, others with a highly structured composition. Either way, they are about containing eternity in the moment.
It is a fact of physics that the very light that illuminates a surface bounces back upon the viewer. That same light that bounces off the wall is reflected off the back of the sculpted relief of her work. These backs of her cut paper are colored and the light effect is a glowing halo from the simple physics of light interacting with surfaces.
For her, harnessing light is a small dance with the infinite. The objects she creates are paintings and sculptures.They hang on the wall and mimic illusionistic space as a painting, yet they are equally sculptures in that they exist in three dimensions free of illusionist space. The actual light that creates the halo effect around her forms is real and present in the gallery.

Roberts Projects presents The Vertigo Project by artist Jean Curran. This body of work is an extraordinary example of color printing in dye transfer and includes representation that appropriates key scenes from Alfred Hitchcock's master opus Vertigo to reveal the cinematographic artistry of the film in a fresh and novel way. Runs thru December 14, 2019.

Veilmetter Los Angeles has four current exhibitions of women artists' works. These include Liz Glynn: Emotional Capital, April Street: The Lady of Shallot, paintings by Margot Bergman and works by Linda Besemer. Liz Glynns's work (image left) includes a number of fragmentary bodies rendered in materials including cast bronze and ceramic.

The Lady of Shallot is comprised of 16 fabric-relief paintings. These works meld landscapes with corporeal elements to create portrait-like vignettes where waterfalls cascade into braids and hair extensions, surreal forms and voluminous lines define space and hyper-sexualized otherworldly elements rise inside and throughout her multi-dimensional surfaces. Berman and Besemer runs thru December 21, 2019. Glynn and Street runs thru January 11, 2020.

ROSE GALLERY is delighted to present Proceed to the Route, an exhibition of photographs by Tania Franco Klein. “My main character is emotion” she says.
In her recent photographs, Klein appears to take up the mantle of the masters: the archetypes of Cindy Sherman’s Untitled Film Stills and the Hollywood lighting of Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s Hustlers, the shocking colors of William Eggleston and the mysterious, glossy poses of Jimmy DeSana. "Like a film-noir alchemist, she combines the erotic and the enigmatic, setting her retro scenes of anxious road trips and glamorous hangovers against the psychological grain of the present: the stress of our digital age; the stress of performing." Runs thru January 18, 2020.

Paint into Pattern: Constance Mallinson 1979-82 continues at Edward Cella gallery Mallinson’s paintings of floating grids of rectangles in pale atmospheric fields are found in her early work from the 1970s. Influenced by both feminist politics and the Pattern & Decoration artists, she turned to the intricate, often dizzying designs of textiles and embroideries from many cultures for inspiration as can be seen in this exhibit. Runs thru January 4, 2020.

I am very excited about the current exhibition at the Getty Center Research Institute Käthe Kollwitz: Prints, Process, Politics. Kollwitz, one of the foremost graphic artists of the 20th century, is celebrated for her printmaking skills used to depict the hardships of war, poverty and injustice as well as for her technical virtuosity. A selection of works on paper including rare preparatory drawings, working proofs, and trial prints shed light on Kollwitz's creative process and reveals the depth of her social and political engagement. Runs thru March 29, 2020.

Shirin Neshat: I Will Greet the Sun Again is the main exhibition at The Broad. The exhibition includes over 200 photographs and eight immersive video installations. Runs thru February 12, 2020.

A mid-career survey of work by Julie Mehretu continues at LACMA. This is a very extensive survey as it includes nearly 40 works on paper with 35 paintings dating from 1996 to the present by the Ethiopian-born artist. Also at LACMA Betye Saar: Call and Response continues. This wonderful yet rather small exhibition focuses on her sketchbooks and their transition to finished works in physical form. I found each of the works quite moving. They are personal, poetic and important. Runs thru April 5, 2020.

With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985 at MOCA is the first full-scale scholarly survey of this groundbreaking American art movement, encompassing works in painting, sculpture, collage, ceramics, installation art and performance documentation. Runs thru May 11, 2020.
