Research Bulletin - November 2019 (Issue 45)

November saw the launch of the UK Standards for Public Involvement in Research. Developed over three years by a UK-wide partnership, including the Chief Scientist Office (CSO) of the Scottish Government the standards are for everyone doing health or social care research and have been tested by over 40 individuals, groups and organisations during a year-long pilot programme.

This continuous development and review of structures and processes is essential to ensure a fit for purpose research environment. and With this in mind, there is still an opportunity to take part in the CSO review of the NRS topic-specific support infrastructure. CSO are seeking views on the experience working with the Networks and Specialty Groups, the appropriateness of the current arrangements and how we can work to ensure optimum performance. Deadline for submission is Tuesday 10 December.

Elsewhere this month, the CSO has announced a joint funding call with the charity Wellbeing of Women; the NIHR Health Service & Delivery Research (HS&DR) Programme is seeking proposals aimed at increasing the evidence base to improve delivery of social care services and outcomes; the iLFT project, headed by NRS Hepatology Clinical Lead Professor John Dillon, won the Innovation Award at the 2019 Scottish Health Awards; researchers at the University of Glasgow have developed a ground-breaking new cancer test for research and clinical trials that could ultimately change the way cancer medicine is delivered; CSO is looking to recruit new members to its research funding Health Improvement, Protection and Services Research (HIPS) Committee; and registration has opened for a number of events including NRS Gastroenterology, NRS Pain and NHS R&D Forum 2020
