Summer 2019 Newsflash

As summer rolls around we look forward to many refreshing swims in our lovely river. Through the year Friends of the Maitai have been busy on planting, plant care, monitoring water quality and ensuring land use issues and river health are kept to the fore for our community’s decision makers; as well as submitting at a national level.

There’s huge growth in mountain-biking as a sport for all ages, already increasing the use of the Maitai Valley. Now comes news that local iwi Ngati Koata, together with a group of investors, are planning a $50million gondola for Fringe Hill. Whether you think this is a great addition to Nelson’s attractions, or out of line with sustainable tourism, ensure you stay informed as the project progresses.
Local residents are worried about the impact of increased traffic on the Maitai Valley Road, and we share this concern. FOM has written to Ngati Koata suggesting alternatives to private cars as part of the project development, for example an electric shuttle from the city.
On the positive side the gondola project would see the pine forest in the immediate vicinity replaced with native planting.
FOM will continue with a watching brief, while making connections with residents and other environmental groups. You can see more here about the gondola proposal:

Fishing at Flock
If you fancy ludo with your latte, the place to go is Flock Café in Church St where numerous games are on offer along with coffee, food and gelato. We’ve given them the Maitai Fish Game, which entertains while educating on the hazards faced by fish heading upstream to spawn. The Council has also republished the fish game in Our Nelson, with some extra copies for people to pick up at the River Kitchen.
End of year afternoon tea at Groom Creek
We’d love you to join us for some end of year cheer and a look at progress in this stunning wetland. It will be an opportunity to get together, thank the Council staff for their
support over the year and maybe even do a wee bit of plant care.
Friday 13 December,  2-4pm, Groom Creek, past Maitai Golf Club (look for our flag). Please bring a plate to share.
