The KAC Global Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) Scholarship Programme 2020 is now open for applications. Proposals to build capacity within the field are encouraged from anyone, anywhere, working in, or hoping to enter THR. Relevant disciplines include public health, research, medicine, science, consumer involvement, journalism, communications and film-making. Scholars participate in a bespoke programme, receive expert mentoring and up to $10,000 to complete their project. The initiative is funded by a grant from the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World; the programme is independently designed and run by KAC. Applications should be received by 14 January 2020. Children buying vapes as 90 per cent of online vape stores don't ask for ID: study

Just 10 per cent of New Zealand websites selling vaping products require customers to prove they are 18 or older before purchase, according to new research. University of Otago public health experts analysed how e-cigarettes and e-liquids were marketed online for the first time in New Zealand. Their study, published in the New Zealand Medical Journal on Friday, found the majority of e-retailers in the industry failed to prevent children and teenagers from accessing their products.

FDA faces fire from researchers saying it has not prioritized e-cigarette testing: report

Researchers are criticizing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for what they see as not prioritizing testing for whether e-cigarettes can reduce smoking deaths while vaping products more visibly face scrutiny due to deaths linked to them. Despite the vaping deaths, some experts say they see e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to cigarette smoking, according to The Wall Street Journal. Kurt Ribisl [...] told the Journal that the FDA could have gotten rid of some expensive and lengthy requirements for animal testing, product composition and stability studies, noting that this is done for some other drugs.

US vaping backlash dents British American Tobacco revenues

A backlash against vaping in US has dented revenue growth at the cigarette-maker British American Tobacco. BAT said revenues in its “new category” arm – which includes vaping – would grow at the lower end of its previously announced range of 30% to 50% for the 2019 financial year. The overall US vaping market has declined by about a quarter, according to Tadeu Marroco, BAT’s finance director, since the health concerns emerged centred on sometimes fatal lung injuries.
