Maggie’s Dundee are really looking for a lot more support with Volunteers, so any help you could give would be amazing.
We are looking for more support in the following locations:
- Drop in Volunteers – welcome visitors and make tea and coffee
- Event volunteers – stall, bucket collections, event stewards
- Admin support – Thank you letters, help with banking, volunteer admin jobs
- Speakers - people who can go do talks / presentations for Maggie’s and also collect cheques on our behalf.

readiness for 2020

Our Voices Forum brings together the diverse knowledge, skills and experience of our members. It is a fantastic opportunity to make valuable connections as well as to explore and discuss topical policy areas with experts and officials.
About the Dundee event
Throughout 2019, our Voices Forum has focused on the different themes of our 25 Calls campaign, which we will continue into 2020. At this meeting, run in partnership with Dundee Voluntary Action, we will be covering the 'supporting children, families and communities' theme with a focus on the provision of early learning and childcare (ELC) in the context of the expansion of funded hours.
Hear from experts about how ready Scotland is for the expansion of ELC provision. Discuss your own work and influence our thinking on this key issue. Explore how the presentations that we hear on the day link with your local context and what Children in Scotland can do to support better outcomes for the children, young people and families that you work with.

We are delighted to welcome Alison Hay from CHANGE (Childcare and Nurture Glasgow East) as a presenter. We also hope to hear from Scottish Government officials on the progress towards early learning and childcare expansion.

Learn more about KEN
In 2020 the Knowledge Industries in Dundee are projected to overtake Manufacturing for the first time, increasing the talent pool and becoming a predominant force for change in the city. With many new and upcoming developments and investments in the city, it is a prime opportunity for the Knowledge Exchange Network (KEN) to tap into the social responsibility of business.
KEN aims to build a directory of individuals and businesses who can offer their skills and expertise to the Third Sector. By sharing skills, knowledge and expertise, business can help to mitigate the impact of funding cuts on Third Sector organisations, increasing their resilience and sustainability. This will create a positive impact in the city as a whole through the promotion of social responsibility, inspiring positive change and making Dundee a go to for talented individuals with a conscience.
Skill and knowledge sharing can take many forms: one to one, short term, goal specific opportunities, workshops which can benefit multiple organisations, group volunteering opportunities which offer team building skills and virtual volunteering e.g. short pre-recorded videos, live webinars or remote short term, goal specific opportunities.
The network is currently looking to build a shopping list of wants and needs from Third Sector organisations and projects, which will qualify our knowledge requests, and to network with businesses and individuals in Dundee to facilitate inclusion in the network/directory.

Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living seeks third sector work experience opportunity
My organisation works in partnership with the Scottish Government and NHS Scotland to run this supported employment scheme. It is part of the Scottish Governments flagship initiative to halve the disability equality gap by 2038. We do this by providing work experience opportunities, at graduate level, with a partner organisation while my organisation supports the trainee. This scheme forms action 40 of the A Fairer Scotland for Disabled People: Delivery Plan.
I represent an organisation that provides work experience for disabled graduates. We are looking for any 3rd sector organisations or social enterprises in the Dundee area who have need of a graphic designer, either for a post or for project work. The candidate in question has a degree in Computer arts, and relevant work experience. We are able to provide a salary for the member of staff.

Scottish Government Consultation
Do you provide childcare in your community – including breakfast clubs, after school clubs or holiday programmes?
Do you provide any activities for children and young people in your communities – what do they want and need from these activity programmes or would you like to offer more?
Do you support children and families in your community – how could affordable and accessible childcare and access to a range of activities benefit them?
A new consultation on Out of School Care has been launched by the Scottish Government. We published our draft framework on Out of School Care on Friday 30th of August and welcome responses until the closing date of Friday 6th December.

This draft framework sets out a vision for out of school care in Scotland, considers the current picture and asks questions about the benefits and challenges of accessing out of school care. In this context, the term “Out of School Care” encompasses a wide range of childcare and activity services which are provided to school-age children outside of school hours – this includes breakfast clubs, after-school clubs, holiday clubs, childminders and activity programmes including youth work. These services are most commonly used by primary school children but we want to hear from services for older children too.
Available evidence points to the importance of out of school care for both children’s and parents’ outcomes - including play, learning and socialisation benefits for the former; and opportunities to work, train or study for the latter. Research also suggests that for low income families school holidays can increase financial pressure and may lead to food insecurity and missing out on opportunities that are available to children in higher income families.
We would like to invite organisations involved in supporting children and families to respond to the consultation, and we would be grateful if you could share widely with your stakeholders as well. There are 18 questions but you can answer as many or as few as you want.
We want to understand what children, young people, parents and carers, professionals and experts think about the ways in which out of school care can give children opportunities to play and access life-enhancing experiences and support parents to work, train or study and what difference this makes for children and families. What could this look like in the future?
We have produced a parent pack to help facilitate group discussions about what families want and need from out of school care. We’re also including a poster with a QR code so that parents can access the consultation on their phone. Encouraging parents to think about what a future system of before, after school and holiday childcare and activities could look like will help us develop future policy which is effective for those who need it most.
If you are able to also engage children and young people so that their voices are heard as part of this developing future policy, we can accept responses to Q6 and Q7 from the consultation in any format – you can send their recorded views to outofschoolcare@gov.scot. We made a film of some theatre work we carried out with children as part of our engagement as we developed our draft framework.

Dundee SOUP
After a great September SOUP at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee SOUP returns to The Circle on 10 December, 6 – 8 pm. Come along to help kickstart some brilliant Dundee projects and have a tasty soup dinner with the city’s supportive community. Book your ticket here.
What is Dundee SOUP?
Based on the popular Detroit SOUP model, with a Dundee twist, Dundee SOUP is a micro-funding dinner celebrating and supporting creative community projects in Dundee.
For a donation of £5, attendees receive soup, bread and a vote and hear from four presentations and then cast the vote to their favourite one. At the end of the night, we count the votes and transfer them into cash that goes directly to the projects presenting.

Independent review of Prevent: call for evidence
This is an open call for evidence. We want to hear a broad range of opinions, expertise and experience from those who can offer an insight into what Prevent means, how it works, and how it affects individuals and communities.
This includes
- those working to deliver Prevent locally and nationally
- those responsible for implementing the statutory Prevent duty(for example, health care professionals and schools and higher education institutions)
- civic groups and charitable organisations
- research and academic institutions with an interest in Prevent
We also want to hear from individuals who have been referred to, or accessed, Prevent services, and parents, carers, friends, or others close to those individuals. We would also like to hear from members of the public and communities who are crucial voices in thinking about how we, as society, can best safeguard those vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism.
How to submit your response
You can complete our online survey and submit your views. You can also paste links to existing reports and articles you think are relevant at the end of the survey. There is a limit on the length of responses per question.
