Access to Headington update
28 November 2019

Traffic management and public exhibition

  • Headley Way: temporary traffic lights are on the road between Copse Lane and Coniston Avenue. These will remain in place until Christmas. The junctions where Derwent Avenue and Coniston Avenue meet Headley Way will also remain closed during this time. The diversion for resident access is via Copse Lane and Eden Drive.
  • Marsh Lane: footpath closures and diversions will remain in place along Marsh Lane for the duration of the works. The junctions where Elms Drive and Horseman Close meet Marsh Lane will remain open, though they will be under narrowed lanes. Motorists should use these junctions with caution.
  • The project team will be holding a public exhibition for the scheme on Monday 9th December. If you’d like to find out more information on the works currently happening or you have questions for the project team, please pop along! The event will be held at Mortimer Hall, 50 Oxford Rd, Oxford, OX3 0PH between 4PM and 7PM.
Headley Way Retaining Wall

Work began on the construction of the retaining wall in September. We’ve encountered some problems with additional utilities underneath the surface which hadn’t been identified before, but we’re working with SGN and BT to move these services out the way and to repair some damaged drainage services.

Unfortunately, this additional work means we need to continue to use temporary traffic signals on the road for longer than planned, and for safety reasons we’ll need to keep the junctions with Coniston Avenue and Derwent Avenue closed. The current diversion to these roads via Copse Lane and Eden Drive is still in place.

We anticipate these additional works to be completed and the temporary lights to be removed before Christmas.

Old Road

The construction of the cycleway along Old Road, connecting Churchill Drive with the works previously completed along the Slade, has now finished. There are still some finishing touches to be made in this area, including lining and signage, however these should be finished imminently.

Oxford Connector Routes

Work started late October in Marsh Lane to deliver a section of the Oxford Connector Routes project.

Though this project is separate from Access to Headington we are making use of resources currently working in the area to reduce any future disruption. The section we will be working on runs from Elms Drive to the OXSRAD Centre.

We will be undertaking some resurfacing work on Marsh Lane for the pedestrian crossing and traffic signal sensor loops and will be installing raised tables at the Elms Drive and Horseman Close junctions.

The work will be undertaken during daytime working hours and there will be footway closures and diversions, temporary traffic lights when necessary and narrowed lanes at the Elms Drive and Horseman Close junctions. The temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled between the hours of 7am and 7pm. The work will take up to 10 weeks.
