Global Synthesis Shows That Biodiversity Loss Results in Lower Yields
Last month researchers evaluated 89 studies looking at connections between biodiversity, ecosystem services, and land use. The studies took place at 1500 sites worldwide, from the US to India. Results show that 20% of the world's farm areas yield less than they did 20 years ago. In monotonously planted areas, the diversity of organisms is reduced, and negatively impacts yields.

Indian State Passes Law to Criminalize Use of Chemical Fertilizers
In a bid to go 100% organic, the Uttarkhand legislature has passed a new law criminalizing the use of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, and pesticides in select areas. Under the new regulation, those found in non-compliance will face fines. The act has also ordered the state government to form a 'State Farmers Commission' to address fair and adequate prices for farmers' products.

Italian Cooperative Launches The Global Glyphosate Study
The Ramazzini Institute, with support from US- and European-based institutions, is launching a comprehensive study on glyphosate-based herbicides. Aiming to produce independent and solid scientific evidence, the institute will not accept funding
from the industry that produces glyphosate
herbicides or from the organic farming and food industry – to avoid all conflicts of interest.
