Healthcare Advocacy Coalitions
Movements and campaigns that promote affordable, equitable, and quality healthcare for all Californians

Healthcare advocacy coalitions can have a powerful impact on health reform. A coalition consists of individuals and organizations with a coordinated approach to achieving a common goal. Through legislative visits, strategic campaigns, and grassroots-level mobilization of stakeholders, many coalitions are able to influence legislation and effectively shape the direction of reform.

In California, Health4All and Care4AllCA are organizing efforts throughout the state to advocate for a better healthcare system. Through passionate and persistent advocacy, members of both coalitions have helped achieve major legislative victories, including Senate Bill 4 (Health for All Kids Act), which was implemented in 2016. SB 4 expanded full-scope Medi-Cal to all California children regardless of immigration status. CaHPSA members were at the steps of our State Capitol advocating for SB 4 in 2015!

CaHPSA is thrilled to be a coalition partner of both Health4All and Care4AllCA

The Health4All campaign mobilizes advocates in support of a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system, one that includes all Californians regardless of immigration status.

Care4AllCA is a coalition of consumer, community, labor, progressive, and health care organizations working to make measurable progress toward universal coverage in our state.

As members of the statewide Health4All and Care4AllCA coalitions, CaHPSA joins our fellow healthcare advocates in celebrating the recent passage of health bills during the 2019-20 legislative session that will improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of our state’s healthcare system. We also recognize that much more can be done, so additional health reform bills will be introduced next year for the 2020-21 legislative session. We hope you’ll join us in continuing to advocate for a healthcare system that will work for ALL people!

How was your experience advocating alongside Health4All coalition partners?

"During my experiences volunteering in underserved communities, I have learned from community members about the systemic injustices that affect education, environment, and health care. At times learning about the history of these injustices felt overwhelming because of their deep roots in politics, racism and socioeconomic inequalities. It seemed like the solutions that were in place were a bandaid on these issues.

My experience attending a legislative visit as a CaHPSA representative was a profound experience for me because it showed me how being involved in advocating for policy can help address these deeper issues. Working with the #Health4All coalition to support Med-Cal expansion for undocumented elders and SB 29, allowed me work with other community advocates and share my experiences of how health disparities affected underserved communities. During the visit, I saw how bringing these stories to Senator Richard Roth helped better inform him of the need for such policy and how it can better the lives of the people he aims to serve. Gaining his support for the SB 29 bill was a big win for the coalition and made me excited to be more involved in bringing awareness for needed policy to make out health care system more equitable."
