Gratitude
As we enter into this magical time of year, I like to stop amid the crazy, hectic, beautiful chaos and ponder why this time IS so magical. We begin the season with Thanksgiving, a time to gather with family and friends and enjoy not only a great, warm meal, but time together creating memories. Our minds can hopefully take a break from busy schedules and chaotic day-to-day things, if only for a few minutes, and find some solace in gratitude and connection. As I write this, it's the basic and simple things that come immediately to mind that I am thankful for; the things that I usually don't even think about and very much take for granted.

Food It is available when I need and I never wonder if I will be able to feed my children. I realize not everyone has this convenient luxury.
|
|
Shelter Another thing I am so blessed to have, and often don't think about. Whether mansion or shack, apartment or hotel, my head stays dry when it rains and warm when the wind and snow arrive.

Education Oh if I only realized when I was little what an incredible, mandated opportunity it was to have to go to school. I can't imagine being denied opportunities or an income simply because I couldn't read.

Access to Medical Care If I am sick, I can drive over to one of many, many doctors, clinics, urgent cares, or hospitals all around me for treatment. I do not have to wait months and months until the one qualified person can perform surgery or treat me.

Definitely not last, and definitely not least, but I'm grateful to be part of Believe in Haiti. This organization is changing bellies, growing minds, and connecting families in Haiti; and it is changing hearts in America. The eye-opening stories and heart-warming opportunities are exactly what I think of on this Thanksgiving and what stays in my mind through the year. Believe in Haiti provides an opportunity to think a little less about myself and a little more about what really matters.
