Room and time change for LLE!


The room and time for LLE talks in the winter term have changed!. All LLE talks next term will take place in WB116 from 12-1pm. The first talk of the new year will be given by our very own Prof. Frank Gu. His talk is entitled, "Bridging Chemical Engineering and Quantum Nanotechnologies to Healthcare and Environmental Protection Applications." For the full list of talks, click here.
 

Teaching Effectiveness Food for Thought Lunch is TODAY!


Today's Teaching Effectiveness Food for Thought Lunch will take place in WB139 from 1-2pm. Prof. Yu-Ling Cheng will talk about her approach to teaching Introduction to Chemical Engineering. The group will also discuss if students are being overwhelmed with too much info and strategies to promote student success.
 

Acting Chair


Prof. Krishna Mahadevan will serve as Acting Chair during the afternoon of Monday, December 2 and Prof. Tim Bender will serve as Acting Chair on Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4.
 

Catching up with Madhushan Perera (ChemE 1T6+PEY)


Madhushan Perera (ChemE 1T6+PEY) has only been out of Skule for a few years, but in that short time has already experienced so much. He admits the he wouldn’t have achieved all that he has if it weren’t for his undergraduate education. Read more.
 

ChemE student wins gold at figure skating fall invitational


The University of Toronto Varsity Blues figure skating team finished first overall at the 2019 fall invitational on Thursday, November 21 hosted by the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa. Erin Ng (ChemE 2T3) won the novice short event, and placed 6th in the senior similar pair with teammate Melanie Zavitski. Read more.
 

Two ChemE student-athletes recognized at the 10th annual Academic Excellence Breakfast


On Wednesday, November 20, 233 University of Toronto student-athletes were recognized at the 10th annual Academic Excellence Breakfast, which was held at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport. Among the group being recognized were Zachary Frangos (ChemE 2T1) for cross country and James Keane (ChemE 2T1) for lacrosse. Read more.

ChemE Future Leaders: John Zhang (ChemE 1T9+PEY)


The boundless opportunities at Canada’s biggest research university are what drew John Zhang (ChemE 1T9+PEY) to the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto. After a year spent at another university, John was looking for a broader range of courses than what he was being offered and decided to explore other options. Now in his 4th year in ChemE, John has found his true passion. Read more.
 

Charles R. Stumbo Student Paper Competition


The Institute for Thermal Processing Specialists (IFTPS) is hosting the Charles R. Stumbo Student Paper Competition. The contest invites papers from students presenting researched progress in methodologies, techniques, system technologies, or other topics relevant to thermal and/or non-thermal processing of food or biological materials including pharmaceuticals to make them shelf stable by inactivating pathogenic and spoilage-causing microorganisms. All graduate students enrolled in an accredited university program are eligible to enter. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, Januray 1, 2020. For full details, click here.
 

Mandatory WHMIS Refresher on Mon, Dec 2


The WHMIS Refresher Session for ChemE will be held on Monday, December 2 from 12:10-1pm in WB116. This session will provide health and safety updates relevant to all staff and students. Attendance is mandatory for all staff, researchers, and graduate students, except individuals that completed CHE2222 in 2019. If you are unable to attend, there will be an online version of this session available later in December, which will be accompanied by a test.
 

Office 365 workshop on Wed, Dec 4


The IT team is hosting an Office 365 workshop on Wednesday, December 4 from 10am to 12pm in WB407. Although this workshop is targeted for staff, interested faculty members are encouraged to attend. SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and Forms will be discussed. To register, click here.
 

Skule Lunch & Learn featuring Greg Evans on Wed, Dec 4


Prof. Greg Evans will be giving the next Skule Lunch & Learn talk on Wednesday, December 4. The event will take place on the 5th floor atrium of the Myhal Centre, run from 11:30am to 1pm, and include a holiday-themed buffet lunch. Prof. Evans' talk is entitled, "Re-engineering Education for a Changing Landscape: Fostering a Path to Lifelong and Lifewide Learning." Tickets are $25. For more info and to register, click here.
 

SOCAAR Seminar on Wed, Dec 4


Jay G. Slowik from the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland will be giving the next SOCAAR Seminar on Wednesday, December 4 from 3-4pm in WB215. His talk is entitled, "Atmospheric Aerosol Analysis by Online Extractive Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry."
 

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on Fri, Dec 6


At 5pm on December 6, 1989, a gunman entered an engineering classroom at Ecole Polytechnique and murdered 14 women and injured several more. The victims were targeted because of their gender, and the date has become a day of remembrance and action against gender-based violence and discrimination. We are one of 14 engineering schools across Canada uniting to commemorate this anniversary. Each school will shine a beam of light into the sky at 5pm on Friday, December 6, from UBC in the west to Dalhousie in the east. Each ceremony across the country will be broadcast live on CBC. U of T Engineering's memorial event will run from 4:45-5:30pm at King's College Circle. It is open to all students, staff, faculty and alumni, as well as members of the Ryerson, OTU and York engineering communities. For more details and to register, click here. In the event of inclement weather, guests will gather on Level 8 of the Myhal Centre.
