December News and Events from
WE Bike NYC!

As WE coast into the last month of the year (and decade!), WE are thankful for all the memories and friendships WE've built in and out of the saddle.

Come celebrate with us at our annual End-of-Season Party. WE'll ring in the holidays, enjoy each other's company, and talk about our bike goals for 2020!

WE Bike NYC Upcoming Events

End-of-Season Party and White Elephant Gift Exchange
Thursday, December 19
7-9pm, Alewife Brewing Co, 5-14 51st Ave, Long Island City, Queens

RSVP

At this month's Happy Hour, WE'll be hosting our Seventh Annual Bike-Themed White Elephant Gift Exchange! Join us to socialize, talk biking and exchange gifts! Please bring a bike-related gift to swap--it can be used or new, $10-$15 value suggested.

Need an idea for a gift to bring?

  • bike tools and patch kits
  • bells
  • lights
  • reflective stickers
  • bike maps/books
  • water bottles
  • gloves/socks/warm winter gear

Be creative, and feel free to re-gift stuff you already have and aren't using! Got a slightly-used messenger bag or backpack you don't want anymore? Not sure what to do with that saddle that didn't quite fit? One person's trash is another's treasure!

Meet us upstairs at Alewife, and the gift swap will start at 7:30pm! Bring a friend and spread the holiday cheer!

Note: This is an all gender event.

Meet a WE Biker: Joanna Giordano

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides or writing our newsletters or responding to mail or building our website. This month's volunteer is Joanna Giordano. Get to know her here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
A bike to (donuts and) hot chocolate. Barely 5 miles to Donut Plant or somewhere. I think I rode almost the distance of the ride just to get to the meet point.

What's your favorite route?
Putnam County Trail that starts in Van Cortland Park. It's mostly shady and scenic. And separated! And for getting around more practically, I like the Greenway on the West Side. It gets crowded sometimes, but I'm not in a rush.

What do you ride?
A sparkly purple blacked-out Brompton 2-speed or a CitiBike.

Why do you love WE Bike NYC?

WE Bike is an amazing resource for women on the fence about riding! I had kind of gone as far as I could go on my own in terms of independent research and browsing. I had to find a tribe. Right from the first WE Bike Happy Hour, I felt welcome even though I didn't have a bike yet or know anything about riding or commuting. People were super friendly and supportive of my aspiration to get riding. Everyone was helpful in offering different advice on what to try like routes, gear, bike types. It's not judgmental or clique-y.

The Facebook Female Bike Forum by WE Bike NYC is an amazing resource. What a difference to get advice from other women on bikes! And I love that there are different levels and styles of riders, so you can find what suits you and you can also see what else is out there if you want to try something new or your needs or goals change. I can't wait to mine the Moms on Wheels group for tips! I'm so glad I know it's there.

WE Can't Do It Without You!

WE Bike NYC is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WE are still entirely volunteer-run, but it takes money for us to maintain our current standards of operation.

If you are looking for a way to support fun, free, noncompetitive bicycle events and programming specifically for women, please consider donating to WE Bike NYC!
