Pacific girls are leading change in the region
Many Pacific adolescent girls face issues like teen pregnancy, violence and abuse, bullying, including cyber bullying, lack of access to education, and cultures, customs and beliefs that restrict the rights and abilities of girls.
Despite these, they are continuing to drive positive change across the region, including through the recent Pacific Girl Inception Workshop and Girls Speak Out event. Read more here.

Minister Payne announced Australian support for Pacific Girl investment with the YWCA of Solomon Islands
|

Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, announced Australia’s support to the Girls Rise Up! project, led by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Solomon Islands in partnership with CARE International.

Radio adventures promoting positive parenting
|
|
Raun Wantaim Savemahn (Hangout with Savemahn) is a radio program home-grown in Papua New Guinea developed to help mums, dads and other family members understand children’s development needs.
Each week, stories address issues
|
|
|
relevant to parents, caregivers and young people such as early childhood development, ending violence against women and children, children’s and mothers’ nutrition, health and water, sanitation and hygiene.
The 45-episode series has been developed by UNICEF as part of its End Violence Against Children Campaign with Papua New Guinea’s Departments of Health, Education and Community Development.

To get the most out of a loan scheme for women, start with family-based training
|
|
We know that women’s economic empowerment brings a range of benefits beyond gender equality gains for individual women. It greatly improves the health, wellbeing and productivity of families and communities and contributes to effective, sustainable development.
|
|
|
But what can be done to ensure that schemes that lend money to women are effective and do no harm? Two Pacific Women projects in Papua New Guinea are showing the importance of conducting family-based financial training before any money is loaned.

Pacific Women undertaking a Six-Year Evaluation
|
|
Pacific Women is undertaking its Six-Year Evaluation from September 2019–September 2020. The findings will support effective implementation of the final three years of the program and guide future Australian gender equality investments. The evaluation is being conducted in two stages.
|

The first stage is underway, focusing on the program’s achievements, lessons and challenges. The second stage, conducted by Pacific researchers from February–September 2020, will further examine the social, cultural and political structures and norms in which Pacific Women operates. Read more.

Digital transformation: The role of mobile technology in Papua New Guinea – how to ensure women benefit too
|
|
The Australian Government commissioned a report titled ‘The Digital Transformation: The Role of Mobile Technology in Papua New Guinea.’ In it, GSMA (an association representing mobile operators) concluded that the take-up of mobile phones and therefore the impact of technology is still in early stages in Papua New Guinea.
|
|
|
They called on the Government and donors to ensure that Papua New Guinea’s digital future is one that will benefit all sectors and regions and leaves no one behind.
