PRESS RELEASE AND STATEMENT TO THE PUBLIC: CONCERNING JİNWOOK KIM

Our entire community is deeply upset upon learning that our South Korean Brother Jinwook (Barış) Kim died in the hospital after he was severely wounded in a knife attack. The attack occurred on November 19, 2019 when Mr. Kim was walking home.

On the morning following the incident, a 16-year-old male was handed over to the Diyarbakır Police by his father. The youth had been reported as a suspect in the murder. Because the defendant had a record for former criminal activity, he was arrested and sent to prison after his initial court appearance. However, the court decided that all the evidence collected and information related to the perpetrator’s apprehension, and the event, which was thought to be an extortion attempt, was to be kept in a secret file.

Regarding the incident which ended in the murder of our brother Jinwook Kim, who worked in commerce along with serving as a volunteer church official in Diyarbakir:

We demand a multi-faceted investigation of the incident, not restricted to the charges of extortion or murder;  that the court’s decision on confidentiality be lifted in order to make the process transparent and that society be continually informed about developments in the situation; and that preventative measures be increased so that similar events not happen again.
