Warm Greetings to all members,
I am currently sitting in my cabin watching the Storm Petrels, Black Browed Albatross and many other sea birds glide past my window in the Antarctic Peninsular. We have just left Deception Island and are heading for the Drake Passage.
I wanted to thank the many who attended the 2019 AGM and continue to support the committee of VAPS. We look forward as a team to provide good service to the Victorian Photographic community into 2020 and beyond.
As we wind down for Christmas and the holiday season of summer, let’s not just think about possible photographic opportunities but time with families and loved ones.
I am co-leading a photographic workshop into Bhutan on the back of this adventure, but will be home later in December, to share valuable time with my family.
Think about the planned convention for 2020 in Wangaratta in June and make arrangements to get there and share in the knowledge and talent and socializing that the VAPS committee have arranged for us all.
Enjoy summer with your camera and take plenty of memorable images!

Conventions
A highlight in 2019 was the successful VAPS Convention held in Churchill in partnership with Latrobe Valley Club. Thank you everyone associated with this informative and enjoyable event, and of course, all speakers and attendees too!
There remained a healthy bank balance at the end of this financial year when summing the VAPS financial accounts, year-end 31 July 2019, with the 2019 Convention a little less than break-even.
Ian Rolfe, President has secured several high-profile professional speakers for the next VAPS Convention to be held in Wangaratta. We look forward to this exciting Convention with presenters providing workshops as well as presentations this time.
Preparations are also well under way for the 2021 Convention to be held in Warragul and several VAPS Committee members and Warragul club representatives visited different locations in the region in November to assess the most compatible locations.

VAPS Interclub
A word on the VAPS Interclub next year. As outlined at the VAPS AGM, there will be a requirement for digital versions to be provided for all prints submitted as part of the VAPS Interclub in 2020. This is to facilitate production of the VAPS Interclub Catalogue for participating clubs and members. It is also to allow selection and confirmation of the specific camera used to create the images submitted as part of the Interclub competition categories.
VAPS is aware that image post-processing workflow settings can lead to removal of EXIF or metadata from images, depending on the particular post-processing software and methods used.
VAPS clubs are therefore asked to ensure that members are made aware that they should use image post-processing methods that retain the metadata against the digital images submitted. The process for ensuring retention of metadata within digital images will be proprietary software-specific.
If there are any questions in relation to the Interclub, please contact the Secretary, VAPS in the first instance.
New VAPS website
Last, but certainly not least, the new VAPS website is now live at www.vaps.org.au . Development had been cost-effective using Stella Fava who had experience both in the photographic world (APS) and web design and development. The new website now has online form options to facilitate re-affiliation, year bar and award submissions. Club ‘officials’ (ie President, Secretary & Steward) may login and authenticate to undertake various activities such as manage club details, re-affiliate, manage club gallery and sight the judges list.
Presentation
An interesting and stimulating presentation from Selby Markham followed the AGM. Selby presented a similar talk he had done at the Melbourne Camera Club where renowned photographers such as Ansel Adams, Man Ray and number of others were discussed in terms of various elements of assessment. These elements included:

Over the past 12 months the APJA has run 3 full day training events (Level 1 – Novice, Level 2 – Intern and Level 4 – Associate). We would like to thank Williamstown, Yarra Ranges and Caulfield Camera Clubs for their help in facilitating this training. For a small group it is quite a big task to get these events to happen, including, securing a venue, getting equipment, organizing speakers, advertising, co-ordinating registrations, catering etc.
The major reason for the existance of the APJA is to provide education, support and guidance for existing judges, new judges and future judges.
As far as financing these training events, these events need to break even, dollar wise. Thanks to VAPS each training event is subsidised by about $330, however the average cost of a training event is around $1000. Levels 1,2,3 are a bit less, but Levels 4,5,6 are a bit more expensive as we need to get (and pay) more professional speakers/presenters. The difference of course needs to be made up from the course participants, and if we fall short, then made up from the pockets of the APJA members. The average number of participants in each course is probably between 25-30, more for Level 1,2,3 and maybe less for Levels 4,5,6.
Club secretaries, image stewards, etc are at this time of year trying to lock in judges for their Image Evaluation nights for 2020, it is getting more difficult, there are more clubs and less judges. Some of the older judges are retiring or cutting back on their judging commitments. There is no doubt that we are going to need some more judges over the next few years if clubs are going to continue to have the traditional once per month “Judging Night”.
It is particularly difficult for country clubs, (there are about the same number of country clubs as there are city clubs). APJA can provide training and support, but not people, we have trained quite a few VAPS club members (at least to levels 1,2,3) over the past couple of years, but very few have yet to put their hand up to have a go at judging. At least one club is subsidising their members to attend judging courses, a few clubs have established Judging Panels that are available to judge at other clubs.
We would like encourage clubs to be pro active in helping members to get involved in judging. Setting up club judging panel is a good way to start, especially if you already have an experienced judge to lead the panel.
Please remember that all judges are not the same, some you may consider to be better than others, but please remember that they they are volunteers, and they are doing their best, and in general, the more experience they have, the better they get.
In 2020 APJA is planning to run, hopefully these dates, but still depends on venues and speakers.
Level 5 – Fellow, Sunday 22nd March. (day event)
Level 1 – Novice, Sunday 17th May. (day event)
Level 3 –Licentiate. Sunday 13th September. (day event)
As well as Image Evaluation workshops (1.5 hours each):
Pt A Sun afternoon 19th April. Pt B Sun afternoon. 14th June .

The Melbourne Camera Club’s End of Year Exhibition brings together club member’s top images for the 2019 EOY competition and exhibition. The level of participation by members has been a feature of the year, with 64 members contributing 270 prints and 356 digital entries in the End of Year competition and exhibition.
The Exhibition is open to the public, free of charge, on Saturday 30th November and Sunday 1st December, and the weekend of 7th and 8th December, 2019, from 10 am to 4 pm, at The Melbourne Camera Club, cnr. Ferrars and Dorcas St., South Melbourne.
Everyone is very welcome.

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY
The society is inviting nominations from Victorian APS members to fill the position of APS State Representative.
The State Representative reports to the Chair of the State Representatives Sub Committee and the role involves:
- Being the local face of APS in their State
- To promote the APS to non-members in the State
- To support APS and its Management and Office in their endeavours to promote the APS and its activities at State level
- To help with general photographic queries and direct members to relevant sources of advice including the APS website
- To make access to APS easier, particularly for those living in regional areas
- To assist and organise APS meetings, outings and workshops if there is sufficient interest
- To provide an APS presence where possible at appropriate events such as Camera Club and State Camera Club Body events, major photographic exhibitions and events
- To liaise with the Chair of the State Representatives committee and the APS President and to work in the best interests of the APS
There is a high level of support for the State representative through the APS Office and the provision of operational manuals and procedure documents.

You do not need to be an active judge to be a member.
The prime objective of the Association is to help develop the evaluation and judging skills of members.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
