What happened to our hall?! What a month this has been with the Covid Level's changing-- our hall is out of action due to the restrictions from the Blind Low Vision NZ policy, but they are reviewing it, and hopefully we can get back to the hall in October.
We are currently giving class outdoors, in the red zone, and the class is a lot smaller! -- on the positive side! And busy with one-on-one training and behaviour.
Case Study: Notably this month, the owner of a German Shepherd Dog that had been adjudicated 'menacing' and thus required to be muzzled at all times, following a complaint by a person who had reported that it had attacked a child. Set aside the emotional baggage that comes with such a complaint, and the challenging conservatism by the central north island territorial authority, we assessed Rorschach using our behavioural ranking tool that compares the qualified (requires input from a trained observer) answers to a standardised questionnaire that enables us to capture the relative skill set and behavioural issues and compare it to tens of thousands of Dogs of comparable breed character.
While, in this case, no teeth were involved. It was a curious dog and a child who didn't know to 'make like a tree', nonetheless, the menacing designation was distressing for the family and in the considered view of us as behavioural assessors, a manifest injustice. With careful presentation to the designated review panel, the outcome has seen a satisfactory resolution and, on evidence from some additional training (a running wait), and completion of Canine Good Citizen, the 'menacing' designation has been duly dropped.
A win win for everyone.

Ear Infections
 Dog’s ears are impressive. For example, they can swivel to locate the source of a sound in 6/100 of a second. However, the design of canine ear canals leaves something to be desired. Their shape (a downward plunge followed by a horizontal tract) can leave debris stuck too easily, which is why dogs—floppy-eared ones in particular—are prone to ear infections.
Telltale signs include: Ear scratching, coloured discharge, odour, redness, swelling, crusted or scabby skin, and impaired hearing.
Also pay attention if your dog wipes his ear on the floor or furniture, or if he shakes his head a lot.
To prevent infections, gently dry your dog’s ears after swimming or baths, and occasionally clean his ears with a cotton ball dampened with a solution recommended by your vet. If you suspect a problem, it’s important not to self-diagnose. Bacteria or yeast causes most ear infections, and both require veterinary treatment.

Easton LaChappelle has always been fascinated by robotics. As a child, he would take apart  everything he could get his hands on, just to understand how things work. During his science fair days, Colorado’s Easton encountered a young girl with a prosthetic arm that looked “archaic” and cost about $80,000.
