A Message From our President

Happy New Year!

"We will open the book, its pages are blank.
We are going to fill those pages ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and the first chapter is the New Year!"

I know SI Bidwell Rancho is ready to fill those pages!
I am looking forward to another great year with everyone, pushing forward with our mission.

We are starting the year off with a Saturday morning at the local Farmer's Market for Trafficking Awareness Day on January 11, sharing what we learned with the public.

In the Spring we will kick off another Dream it, Be it  project , together with SI Chico and SI Orland . We will once again be at Fairview High School in Chico.

We also be getting ready for our 25th Microbrew Fest Anniversary!!!! WOW
Tickets can be purchased now!

I want to take this opportunity and wish every club in the Sierra Nevada Region a very happy and successful 2020!

With appreciation Babette Maiss

Regional Governor: Lane Parks

January 11th is Trafficking Awareness Day

I encourage all Clubs to do something to continue to raise awareness to this heinous crime.

You can even talk to a neighbor, your kids, your friends, your doctor or dentist.

Law enforcement is doing more stings using social media, so the victim numbers have gone down. However, the demand has not!

As an example, at the end of October, 24 men were arrested in a week-long sting. Lathrop Police, San Joaquin County Deputies, Manteca Police Department and Parole Officers arrested 24 men who thought they were going to have access to a child under the age of 14!

I have been working with the Placerville Club, and based upon my assessment with law enforcement in the County, Marshall Hospital now has a full clothes closet in the Emergency Room. Law enforcement has access to the closet 24/7. Yeah, team!

Thanks so much to all of you who have helped the Anti-trafficking efforts in our region.

I greatly appreciate your efforts! Have a wonderful holiday season.

Camp Fire Relief Fund Update

(12/15/2019)

As 2019 comes to a close, we are also closing out the Camp Fire Fund, which was made up of donations from our Soroptimist sisters near and far.  After disbursing $$$ earlier in the year, we disbursed the remaining $21,000 on November 8, 2019.  There were seven recipients of these funds, averaging $3000 each.  Six of the recipients have from one to four children, and one has a mother to care for.  These ladies and their families needed and requested funds for the most basic items including food, warm clothes, and blankets.  Some were also struggling with housing and relocation costs.  These women were given checks for discretionary expenses, as well as gift cards to Target, Walmart and Winco, and a personal note from us.  It has been a very humbling and heart warming privilege to serve on this committee on your behalf.”
– SI Bidwell Rancho, Camp Fire Relief Committee

On December 12th, 2019 SI Bidwell Rancho and our Inspire S-club came together for the annual Santa Project! 🎄
We work with Chico Area Recreation and Park District together to give about 150 children a magical evening, complete with a visit from Santa, Art projects, goodie bags and snacks.
A huge "Thank you" to the Santa Project Committee!

Human Trafficking Awareness
Human Trafficking is the heinous, modern form of slavery in this world. Traffickers manipulate victims by force, coercion, fraud, and more to control victims to commit acts against their will. The two most severe forms of human trafficking are sex trafficking and labor trafficking.
Soroptimists of Bidwell Rancho-
January 11th is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day
To bring continued awareness to the Chico area our Anti Trafficking Committee will have a booth at the Chico Saturday Farmer's Market on Saturday January 11th. We will have educational materials to hand out and will answer basic questions. We are inviting all club members to join us. At least one of our committee members will be there at all times during the market (7am-1pm) and we will have reference material for you to refer to if needed.
Our club supports educators and clinicians in our area by sponsoring them to attend conferences on Sex Trafficking so they may help the youth in our area.
Kinda Regards,

Every month we will introduce a Member!
Meet Gayle Luna, Great Beach Holidays and Vacation

I came to Chico in 1961 from the East Coast, New York to be exact. My dad at the time was 1st trumpet for CBS. In 1960 my parents became involved in a Macrobiotic/Zen group. The group practiced a healthier peaceful way of life. They believed in eating what the land gave you. In the early 60’s there was a fear of the atomic bomb. The group leader was encouraging everyone to exit New York and find a place to live that would work well with their new lifestyle and would also be away from any bomb threats. Chico was the location that they picked. Twenty families quit their jobs and sold everything that would not fit in their car. They caravanned from New York to Chico and were called the “Exodus Group” by the various newspapers that followed them and posted updates during their trip. Every 5-year anniversary of their Exodus the national newspapers would publish an update right up until my dad passed away in 1999.

I know your wondering what does this have to do with “Gayle”. Well, my dad has always been entrepreneurial and passed that along to his kids. He invented the rice cake in the early 60’s. It only took 20 years to catch on. In 1989 I created the first “Gluten Free” pizza crust and ran a successful business for over 20 years. In 2010 I was involved in the creation and manufacturing of Mary’s Gone Crackers. Somewhere in between all of that my sister and I thought it would be fun to open a restaurant. NOT AS FUN AS IT SOUNDED…. .and, of course we opened it when the economy was not great. We worked at it for a couple of years and finally decided to throw in the towel. Now for the most part I am retired.

I have two grown boys. Bryce is 33 and lives in Chico. Brent is 31 and lives in Oakland.

I love traveling, reading and cooking.

In 2008 I discovered and joined Soroptimist. It has meant a lot to me to be a part of an organization that does such great things for the community and throughout the world.
