Capital One Bank Graduates its 2019 "Getting Down to Business" Class

A Variety of Businesses Represented in New Orleans

On November 21, 2019, I had the honor of being one of the proud graduates of Capital One Bank’s Getting Down to Business small business development program. The program culminated in a ceremony at Xavier University after 12 weeks of sometimes grueling sessions, covering a broad range of subjects structured to create successful entrepreneurs.

On the Basis of Sex: Where will the first step take you?




Earlier this year, I attended a screening of On the Basis Sex hosted by the Women in the Profession committee. The film depicted young lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she navigated both family life and career, and one of her many groundbreaking challenges to gender discrimination before the United States Supreme Court. In recent years, Justice Ginsburg, the second of only four women to be confirmed to the United States Supreme Court, has become a pop culture icon known for her fiery liberal dissents. Justice Ginsburg has even gained the moniker “the Notorious RBG,” a nod to the rapper The Notorious B.I.G. with whom she shares humble Brooklyn beginnings.

Kristen Lee is a graduate of Loyola University, holding Political Science and Law degrees. She is currently a Judicial Law Clerk in the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal and the winner of numerous academic awards. Kristen is the daughter of Calvin and Karen Lee.
Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal quoted some Slide residents who expressed concern that Slidell may be coming the new New Orleans East, based on crime activity. This statement triggered an impassioned response from Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the following statement from the New Orleans Business Alliance CEO.

Home to NASA Michoud (where Boeing is building Space Launch Systems for 10 future missions to the Moon and Mars), one of the largest coffee-roasting facilities in the world (Folgers) and the rebirth of an iconic beverage brand at an 85,000 square foot brewery with the capacity to produce 100,000 barrels a year (Dixie), New Orleans East is a driver for the region’s economy, including communities on the north shore, like Slidell.  Read more.
