The Power of Reflection

As a reader of Interesting Times you probably share with us at BWIS an enthusiasm for personal growth and development. And like us, many of you may work together with others in groups.

One of the ways we’ve developed of working together over the last 5 years is to begin with space each time to reflect on our previous week, and to check in on our ‘here and now’ physical and emotional wellbeing. It helps us collaborate more effectively in our business meetings with greater empathy and mutual understanding.

This initial checking-in features in most of our regular events - monthly Mindfulness groups, the E-Gym, the Peer Support Network, the Coach Group (restarting in 2020). It is the invitation to reflect on ‘how have you been since we last met?’

And if for a newcomer it can feel a bit clunky or self-exposing, then the opposite is true as a group matures and develops over time. At the Woodbridge mindfulness drop-in group there’s a core of people who’ve been ‘dropping-in’ for the last 7 years or so – during which we have been having babies together, moving home, completing our doctorates, learning the ukulele, even having a kidney transplant together!

Here’s an idea: In becoming known by others we come to know ourselves better. A specialised one-to-one version of that is offered through our professional therapy services. And as I (Martin) reflect on 25 years work as a psychotherapist and 30 years a mindfulness teacher, I can attest to the two-way truth of that proposition: I’ve learned so much about myself from the people with whom I’ve been privileged to work!

The next opportunity for reflection with the BWIS learning community is the Dec 12 Life Lounge, led by Charlie with Martin’s help. It will be an enjoyable inquiry called Three Things I Learned this Year. “Life can only be understood backwards, but must be lived forwards” is our subtitle (and perhaps a clue to January’s Life Lounge). See you there.

Inspiring Quotes

“How people treat other people is a direct reflection of how they feel about themselves.” - Paulo Coelho

“The beginning of love is to let those we love be perfectly themselves, and not to twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them” – Thomas Merton

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves” – Carl Jung

“We live in a house with 4 rooms: Physical, Mental, Emotional, Spiritual. We tend to live in one room most of the time… but unless we go into every room every day (even only to keep it aired) we are not complete.” - Rumer Godden

And Finally ...

Not everything has to turn out exactly the way you planned in order for you to call it a success. Sometimes all God wants you to do is to ‘get the ball rolling’. Then she will take it from there.
So when things turn out other than the way you wanted them to, don't be so quick to say Bummer! Many a Bummer is a Blessing in disguise. Consider the possibility that life is magic... and that there's a rabbit in that hat.
