Welcome to the December issue of The Wingecarribee Word.

There are lots of activities for kids at the library in December. Our annual Summer Reading Club is on again. This year there is a $200 book voucher to be won and 40 reading challenges to attempt. We also have fantastic Christmas craft activities at each of our branches. Check out What's on this month and Kids & Teens for details.

Renewal reminders for annual FOWL memberships will soon be on the way. If you're not a current FOWL member but would like to be, visit the Library's website for details on how to join. Gift memberships are also available.

We'll be taking a little time off - our Christmas and New Year opening hours are listed in Did You Know. You'll still be able to access great resources online. Read E-Library to find out how.

We wish all our members and the wider community a safe and happy holiday period.

We hope you enjoy this month's issue of The Wingecarribee Word.

Archival Revival : discovering our local history
 TREASURE TROVE

Though the library will be closed over Christmas and New Year there are other great ways to get your history fix over the break. Try searching Trove for digitised articles from historic local newspapers, images or government gazettes - there's plenty to discover.

This article is from the Robertson Advocate on 24th December, 1918. It tells us about the Mittagong Town Band's carolling schedule for that evening as they, "tender to the residents the usual annual complimentary programme." What a lovely way to spend Christmas Eve.

The Local Studies Collection is open 2.00pm-4.00pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, or by appointment, upstairs in the Old Town Hall, in front of Bowral Library. See what we have in the collection here.

If you'd like a little help using Trove or any of the Library's eResources, why not book a Tech Time session?

Author of the month : Graeme Base

Graeme Base is a unique and talented artist and writer. Graeme was born in England in 1958 and relocated to Australia with his family when he was 8 years old. Graeme is well known for his madly detailed alphabet book, Animalia which received international acclaim when it was published in 1986 and has now sold over 3 million copies.

During his school years Graeme always enjoyed English and writing. He believes he was a bit weird as he was interested in things like grammar and spelling. Graeme always wanted to be an artist, always drawing in the margins of his school books.

Graeme completed a graphic design course before finding employment in advertising which he found quite boring. Later on he started to do freelance illustrations for some publishing companies, creating pictures for other people's texts, then decided to have a go at writing a story himself. His first book was
My Grandma lived in Gooligulch. He is now well known for his second and third book, Animalia (1986) and The Eleventh Hour (1989).

Currently, writing only takes up a small part of Graeme’s working day. He spends the majority of his time on the artwork for his books, however a picture book text can still take weeks to get right. And even at the end of the project he is still finding ways to improve the text.  Each piece of art takes anything from two to six weeks.
To date, Graeme has written and illustrated around 20 books over a 33 year period. Each book usually takes one or two years to complete. He finds coming up with the idea is quick, and writing is reasonably quick too, it’s the artwork that takes time, and the layering of ideas and messages.

Graeme currently lives in Melbourne with his wife, Robyn and their three children.
