Coach's Comments

"There's no hiding it; the weekend was tough for the Premier team.
A better team comprehensively outplayed us.
But like all things it's never that bad, the sun still came up, and we still have some positive takeaways from the weekend.
Parnell is the competition favourites for a reason. They amassed 432/7 against a very good Suburbs New Lynn side only the week prior, so we knew what we were up against it.
On a flat wicket, we lost the toss and asked to bowl. The team showed that we are no pushover by dominating Parnell for the majority of the first two sessions. We eventually bowled them out for 219, and that was with one player scoring a century, so I was extremely pleased with that side of our game.
Special mention should go to our young rockstar Simon Keene who took personal best figures of 4/46 in his new role of opening bowler. On debut, Rory Bessell returned the respectable figures of 1 for 24 from his nine overs and took a wicket with his very first ball in Premier cricket.
Unfortunately, we were unable to back this up with the bat and were put under constant pressure by a highly impressive Parnell seam attack. The group has now experienced a valuable lesson in what the highest standard of club cricket looks like, and we have lived to fight another day.
Not to be outshone, a special mention of our Premier Reserves. They made their live streaming debut at the Domain with a comprehensive towelling of East Coast Bays. The Reserves have mirrored the Premiers in some respects in that there has been a mixed bag results-wise. We have both struggled to consistently put the same team on the park due to player unavailability. So it was good to see this team scrap really hard and get some needed competition points that place them right in the hunt with a two-win one-loss record.

Our attention now shifts to the busy One-Day and T20 campaigns kicking into gear, which is an opportunity for both teams to fall back into routines they are comfortable with.
Hopefully, we can build some momentum heading into the Christmas break."

Premiers Pushed By Parnell

Winning the toss and deciding to bat, Parnell struggled against a spirited North Shore attack, apart from No 5 batsman, Rodden, who scored 110 out of a total of 219.
An aggressive Simon Keene (4-46) mixed it up with Parnell’s in-form top order, but Rodden’s resolve gave the hosts something to defend.
North Shore was reasonably happy to keep Parnell to 219 after Tendai Chitongo wiped away the tail, but by stumps on Day One, the Shore were reeling at 115/7 with Tendai top-scoring with 31.
However, Shore was still confident the following morning until Parnell mopped up the tail early and took an 84-run lead.
Shore was hoping Parnell might set them a chasable target. However, they batted on until they were 210/6 setting Shore 295 off 44 overs to win but rain cut short the day with Shore just holding on at 111/5.
As a result, Shore only gained three points from the match and has slipped down to second to bottom on the points table, one point behind Suburbs and University.
The next Hedley Howarth Championship Match is not until 2nd February, and one good result could see them back contesting a top spot.
This Saturday, Shore goes back into One-Day mode against Eden Roskill, at home, on Devonport Domain

Major Reserves Blow Away Bays
The North Shore Premier Reserves major team made a strong comeback against Bays at home, despite losing the toss and being sent into the field on a scorching hot summer's day.
There is always some apprehension being sent in the field on a well-used deck with little life in it. However, some controlled, diligent bowling and a lot of pressure, was justly rewarded with a steady supply of wickets.
Manaia and Frew set the tone early by grabbing two edges that were collected gleefully.  A small partnership was formed, but broken when change bowler Watto proceeded to bowl a few of his signature slower balls.  The batsmen swiped across the line and his poles had his knocked over.
Goose went on a mini-rampage. He collected a couple of poles, one smashing into the stumps and the other a simple edge caught behind by young superstar, Jonnie Smith (at left).  Johnnie is fresh off nearly 300 runs in two innings for the club.
Malav perhaps more known for his batting got the critical scalp of the set opener who was caught spectacularly in the deep with a diving catch by Frew.
Manaia, Watto and Goose returned to make short work of the tail as we wrap them up for 202 runs.
Right from the get-go, Shore set about chasing the score with a purpose and clarity we haven't seen too much of this year.  All batsman contributed. It was pleasing to see good partnerships formed with a few individual milestones along the way from Jonnie (55) and Asiri (49 not out).
A convincing result, chasing the score down in just under 45 overs only four down.

A Very Nice Letter...

Hello Hayden
I have read with interest the progress with the club and  I will donate $1000.00 to help the club finances.
You may be interested to know who I am.
Leaving Takapuna Grammar in 1945 where I had been wicket-keeper in the first eleven, I joined North Shore Club where I kept wickets for the next 16 years.
During that time I represented Auckland as Brabin Cup wicket-keeper and chosen for a New Zealand Eleven. I was selected as keeper for Auckland and played many games for the B team and travelled around NZ for six years as reserve keeper for the Plunket Shield team. Unfortunately, I never played there - the incumbent Len Kent was too good and never injured so I was “always the bridesmaid never the bride“.
I was club treasurer for many years being a Chartered Accountant. I could not have wished for a better club and I made many friends.
Unfortunately, to the best of my knowledge, there are none left with whom I played - I am rising 92!
These days I am in an apartment in Takapuna and I do not drive so I have not been able to visit the Club and watch games.
Best wishes for a successful year,

Bill Crump

Millie Yorke sweeps to the boundary

Women do us Proud

The NSCC Sportslink International Premier Reserve Women took on the fearsome Mangere team last Saturday.
We commenced the game with two goals – bat out our overs for the first time this season and score more than 100.
We started a bit wobbly, but Milly and Alison put on 53 runs before Alison took off on a suicidal single.
Milly carried on playing some powerful shots to all parts of the ground and a further 29 runs were added with Katie. Then we lost 3 wickets with the score on 85 and still seven overs left – gulp!
But our younger players, Maia and Rishika stepped up to the task and calmly batted out the rest of the overs for a partnership of 32 runs. They both finished on 14 and eight not out respectively.
Milly (left) top-scored with 46 and team total 117/8.
Both goals achieved!
We knew that the Mangere women liked to hit the shorter balls – so aimed to bowl fuller length and protect the boundaries.
It got a little tense at times but everyone stayed so focused, chased hard and we mixed the bowlers up well.
Each time it looked like the game was swinging Mangere’s way, there was some brilliance from us - a fantastic over from Rishika with two wickets in one over. And then there was Rhian’s run out – fired into the bowlers end from mid-on, demolishing the stumps - coach Elliot would be proud! The pressure mounted on Mangere and they couldn’t get our total finishing at 103/7.
Rishika ended up with four wickets for 10 runs off four overs – bowled beautifully.
It really was a complete team performance – well done!

Congratulations Boys!
