The Winter Solstice is upon us, and ever-so-slowly the days will begin to lengthen toward Spring. In the meantime, however, the darkest, dreariest days are yet to come. And we survive them with hope, promise, and connection.

Without the Dark……
 “Without the dark, there can be no light, so let it be a dance,” wrote poet and Unitarian minister Rick Masten. Masten is passed on now, but his words continue to reverberate for me when I think of this dark time of the year, of my own dark times, and of the light returning. The dance, of course, is both with myself and the world around me.
As I write this, and as you receive it, we are in the season of Yule, Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, and other world holidays that celebrate light, and rejoice in the Sun’s return. It feels ironic to me that, while the light grows stronger and longer every day after the Winter Solstice, I continue to feel the oppression of the darkness.
And yet, I also rejoice in the darkness. The calendar new year on January 1 affords me the opportunity to look forward to how I might grow and learn next year. It helps me continue my solitary journey to self, to plumb the depths of my soul. This is a fallow time for both the land and for us. It is a resting time in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Earth sighs deeply and lets the dark, the cold, and the damp take over so that her soils are enriched for spring planting. So too is it a time to embrace the softness of the growing time within ourselves.
The coming of the Light, of course, is about promise and hope. But so is the darkness. It is in the darkness of soil that seeds take hold, that roots stretch tentatively, that decaying matter becomes powerful compost to nourish new growth.
So, too, is it with you. Be grateful for the coming of the light. Celebrate the rising of the sun. Sing songs of joy and peace. Be merry. Lift a cup of kindness for auld lang syne.
But, amid the hustle and bustle, be grateful also for the darkness. Go within. Ask the hard questions. Then be silent. Be still. Await the answers. This coming year, 2020, is a working year. Numerologically, it is a Four year, a year of building a strong foundation for the times to come.
Work with the energy of the New Moon just past midnight on December 26. This is a perfect opportunity to take time for yourself, and to prepare for the year ahead, to work toward manifesting lessons gently that are for your highest good.
The Moon is full on January 10 at 2:21 pm eastern, in the sign of Leo, but goes void-of-course just four hours later. This means you have a very short period of time to plan a magical New Year/First Full Moon ritual. Do it. The more we offer up gratitude, the more connection we have with universal energy.
“Let it be a dance we do, through the good times and the bad times too. Let it be a dance we do, for me, for you,” wrote Masten.
Dance. Dance in the joy of the darkness. Dance on Mother Earth’s fallow soil. Dance in a ribbon of moonlight. Dance in the coming sparkling sunlight.
Dance in your heart and in your spirit. But dance! |

Tarot Meditation for January: The Fool
 A new year approaches, and it’s time to begin your journey to yourself. The Fool isn’t about being “foolish,” but rather innocent, open, and willing to face unknown challenges on the journey to learn life’s lessons.
As the first key in Tarot, The Fool gives us a glimpse into the rich symbolism of Tarot – its connection to numerology, to world beliefs and cultures, to the symbolism of plants, colors, landscapes, animals, and so much more!
The Fool guides us, innocent and open as s/he is, into ourselves. What are the talismans we take with us on our spiritual journey? What are the ones in the wallet tied to the Fool’s staff?
What landscapes – both real and metaphorically - must The Fool traverse along life’s journey? What are yours? What companions will The Fool and her/his dog meet along the way? Who will you meet and how will they guide you?
As you begin 2020, think of the year as an open landscape, a great adventure, a glorious pilgrimage, into the depths of your spirit. Do what nurtures your soul. Travel into yourself. It may not be easy, but it’s worth the journey! |
