OUSA Official Policy on COVID-19

In summary:

1. Clubs should promote the health, safety and wellness of orienteers and volunteers above all else. Clubs are expected to follow national and local governmental regulations and guidelines. Clubs are strongly discouraged from holding gatherings or traditional events for the immediate future to mitigate the spread of the virus.

2. Sanctioning of OUSA events and championships scheduled through the end of April 2020 is suspended. Clubs are encouraged to postpone events to a later date and will be given priority and preference for open dates in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. The suspension of sanctioning for additional events will be considered as they approach, based on current conditions.

3. Alternatives to traditional events that implement social isolation and avoid gatherings are encouraged.

Orienteering in the COVID-19 Era

The global COVID-19 pandemic has upended the orienteering calendar for the spring and summer seasons.  Most local, national and international events in the next few months have been cancelled or postponed to a later date.

Many of us across the US are under varying levels of stay at home & social distancing directives at this time and are sorely missing the opportunity to participate in orienteering events.  Many clubs have found creative ways to allow members continue to enjoy the sport while complying with their local and state measures.

Clubs have posted virtual street-o courses by posting maps and having participants answer questions while navigating a course online in Google Street View.  Others are setting barebones events by putting out control flags, making course maps available online for download/printing and encouraging participants do the course on their own over an extended window of time to ensure social distancing protocols are met.

{Note: OUSA strongly discourages people from traveling any great distance to participate in such events at this time.  Check with your local club to see if there are local opportunities while still abiding by your local restrictions}

Other groups are posting puzzles and challenges online to facilitate armchair orienteering including the popular Route to O-Season series where map snippets from prior major international events are posted.  Draw your own route for the days challenge leg and then compare route choices with others as well as the elite athletes who competed on those courses.

OUSA is posting new material to our Facebook & Twitter feeds on a regular basis - we will get you through this!!

We'd love to hear from you about other creative ways you are finding to get your orienteering "fix".  Please contact the editor at newsletter@orienteeringusa.org to share ideas, pictures & stories to the next newsletter!
