A Holiday Wish Come True...

With so many dogs coming into rescue, we wanted to take a minute to share a happy holiday story from one of our adopters! "This is Emilie. She is my baby, and we share a bond that I had not previously known to truly exist. I have had several dogs over the last 55 years but never a Great Pyrenees. About 4 years ago, I had lost both of my labradors. Those two were my first attempt at being a foster parent, and I failed. I had my boys for 12 years, and within 8 months of each other they passed due to old age issues. That was a tough year, and as I was grief stricken, I decided I wasn't going to go through that again. Well, fast forward 1.5 years and I was really missing not having a dog. I knew I would never "buy" a dog as I knew there were countless that were waiting to be saved. I also knew I wanted a big dog, as I have only had large breeds in the past. So thanks to google, I searched large breed dog rescues near me. And one of the results was NGPR in Springfield, ohio. And it was love at first sight. Just the pictures of these white giants had my heart racing. And the more I read about them the more I wanted to meet one. The only problem was that I share my home with my wife, and she was more heartbroken over our labs, and she was not willing to ever "get close again". So for months, almost nightly, as I would read about the breed and show her pictures of all the babies needing adopted she would just say, "yes they are adorable, but I just can't go through the heartache again". So I just tried to bury my desires, and then one day in the fall of 2017, my wife had to go out of town, and I got in my car and drove to New Beginnings Kennel. I wasn't sure where they were but I found them. I knocked on the door and I was introduced to the kennel staff and then introduced to the great white babies. By the time I left I was covered in white fur and dog slobber, and knew what I had been missing. One of those dogs was Emilie, and needless to say it was love at first sight. I left and later that night I confessed to my wife what I had done while she was gone, and again she expressed her opinion that she would not allow herself to get close to another dog. And like most husbands, I did what I wanted. I applied to adopt, kept the process on the down low, bu Christmas Eve, 2017, I had to come clean. I told my wife we were adopting Emilie the next morning, Christmas day. It was the best decision I have made in years. It was love at first sight for me, and even though my wife was determined not to allow herself to fall in love again, well 2 years later I can tell you she has fallen hard. Emilie is our baby, our protector, our joy, our life. If you have ever thought about getting a dog, please adopt. And if you're thinking about a Great Pyrenees, believe me they are beautiful creatures. Emilie loves to cuddle, play hide-n-seek, loves children, and of course belly rubs and home cooking!"

Home for the Holidays

There's still time to adopt a Pyr before the holidays. Hundreds of Pyrs across the country are waiting for their furever homes. Aspen, above is in Washington state.  Adopting a dog makes room in a foster home for another dog coming in from a kill shelter. Shelters fill up around the holidays and the dogs need our help now more than ever.
