New CAPs launch

We’ve been busy launching new CAPs, from Tunbridge Wells in Kent to Arran in North Ayrshire, together with Gorleston and Bradwell in Norfolk and at Reading University (pictured left). This university CAP will encourage responsible drinking in and around campus as part of our strategy to provide continued support to young adults.

They bring our total to 187 CAPs launched across the UK – all doing fantastic work to prevent alcohol harm to young people.

Celebrating Cardiff CAP's first birthday

Cardiff was the first of our CAPs to include 18-25 year olds within the project. Home to four major institutions of higher education, Cardiff has a vibrant night-time economy and CAP works to ensure the safety of young people in the city. At the end of November CAP partners came together for a special event to celebrate a very successful first year and make plans for the next 12 months.

Congratulations to our shortlisted awards entries!
In November we announced the shortlist for our annual CAP awards, which recognise exceptional achievements in tackling underage drinking. Thank you to everyone who entered – the standard of entries was really high and showed the great work that CAPs are doing. You can see the shortlist here and the winners will be announced at our celebration event at the House of Lords in January.
Partnership working across Cumbria
The shortlist generated lots of publicity for CAP. Most significant was in Cumbria, where local media celebrated three CAPs that have been nominated for awards - Barrow, Longtown and Copeland. This prompted all four of our Cumbria CAPs to get together to share good practice and ideas, and this unique cross-county partnership will meet in January.
Young Health Champions

Many of our CAPs take part in the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) Young Health Champions initiative, a Level 2 qualification which aims to give youngsters the skills, knowledge and confidence to become peer mentors.

We're very proud of our newest young health champions. Pupils from Tonbridge Grammar School (above) received their certificates in October and 18 year old Sam Johnson (right) who received her certificate recently, is now a regular contributor to Barrow CAP meetings.
Alcohol Awareness Week

CAPs were out in force during Alcohol Awareness Week from 11-17 November to help people understand the risks of drinking too much. One special event took place at Waverley Station when all our Edinburgh CAPs came together for a community event to demonstrate how they are reducing the sale of alcohol to young people, advising on the dangers of underage drinking and providing alcohol-free activities to engage them.
In Reading local ‘mini-police’ took part in an alcohol raising session (left) while in Orkney, the CAP worked with Tesco and the Co-op to give out mocktails and alert shoppers to the dangers of young people’s alcohol abuse. In Bournemouth, the emphasis was on visiting off-licences around the town centre to offer training to prevent underage sales and improve compliance.  And we were delighted to see visits across Kent schools by our supporter, singer-songwriter Henry Maybury – you can read his blog here
In the news

Our Barrow CAP was featured on Radio Five Live in October, in a discussion about underage drinking and the work of local police and CAP partners to tackle it. And we were delighted when Drinks Retailing News published a very positive article last month about CAP’s work which you can read here.

Happy Christmas!

Our Christmas poster is a timely warning against buying alcohol on behalf of young people over the festive period. Do get in touch if you’d like copies.
