NEWS FROM THE HALSWELL COMMUNITY PROJECT

Happy new year to all our readers

As I write it is New Year's Eve and a good time to be reflecting on the year that is gone and thinking about the year ahead.
The thing that stands out for 2019 is how much generosity I’m seeing in our community.  The Giving Tree (see in the right hand column) is a great example of that.  The amount of giving and helping that I see on our Facebook groups is another.
I’m also aware that many people in this community also gift a huge amount of time, skill and energy to the community through their work in the many local community groups in Halswell.
Thanks to all of you for making our place a good place to live.
I’d also like to thank the people that have stepped up to help the Halswell Community Project in many different ways.  Julie (who runs our coffee mornings), Paul, Mike, Ross, Dave, and Jason who have happily helped out whenever they are needed and Marilyn, who has been a mainstay at the Market, are all people who come to mind, as do the hardworking committee that sits in behind our wonderful staff: Kate, Keri and Lynne our newsletter editor.  Thanks, too, to Judy and Ellen who run the Community Garden. It has also been wonderful to see people step up to run some new activities in the community.
Thanks to all who help make our place hang together and may it all continue and grow in 2020.
Chrys Horn

KIDS CHRISTMAS MARKET

Halswell Community Hub held its annual Kids Indoor Christmas market on Saturday December 7th. 20 children of all ages set up their stalls selling old toys and books, crafts they had made and even some baking.  It was great to see the excitement and pride on their faces and the market had a wonderful vibe to it :-)

NEWS FROM NGA PUNA WAI
As the year comes to an end, we take the chance to reflect on a successful 12 months – and what a year it has been!  Ngā Puna Wai has seen almost 150,000 people walk through its gates this year alone, a staggering number certainly worth celebrating.
From community walking groups and regular sporting seasons to international sporting events and car shows, this special facility has played host to it all, and next year is set to be just as good.  Whether you're a player, supporter or spectator, or simply want to enjoy this beautiful venue, we look forward to seeing you at Ngā Puna Wai in 2020.

SILVER BIRCH TREES AND POLLEN
 by Adele Geradts

Recently I was asked about the removal of the silver birch (Betula pendula) trees on Rempstone Drive in Halswell. In 2017, residents of Rempstone Drive asked the Community Board for the Silver Birch trees in their street to be removed. The Silver Birch trees are not only a nuisance but also affecting people’s health.

HALSWELL SHARING SHACK
The sharing shack along with two bookshacks can be found outside the Halswell Hub at 381 Halswell Road.

The idea behind the food shack is that if you have surplus fruit, veges or other non-perishable items you can donate them to the sharing shack to support others who may be finding things a bit tough at the moment.

You can take books and bring them back or swap them from the book shacks - whatever works for you.

Our philosophy is to take what you need, leave what you don’t and it has been amazing to see the shack fill and empty on a regular basis - sometimes 3 or 4 times a day!! We have had some very generous donations and Shedy can often have plants and seeds as well a wide variety of food.

if you would like more information you can contact Kate or Keri at the Halswell Hub on halswellhub@gmail.com or just drop in to see us and Shedy.

HAVE YOUR SAY: – NEW PERMANENT ALCOHOL BAN FOR RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYING FIELDS
Amendment to Schedule 1 of the Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw 2018

The CCC are looking for feedback on their proposal to make a new permanent alcohol ban for rugby league playing fields and adjoining areas.  The proposed alcohol ban will apply while the fields are in use for rugby league: from 3pm to 8.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 6pm Saturdays and Sundays from April to August of each year, and to adjoining public areas such as carparks, changing areas, walkways and playgrounds.
The ban will prohibit the consumption and possession of alcohol in the places and times outlined above. The ban does not apply to licensed premises such as clubrooms.
The proposal is intended to minimise the potential for alcohol-related offensive behaviour, to protect public safety and to create a friendlier environment during rugby league games.  Find out more here
Find the proposed bylaw amendment and information on the proposal on the Council website.  For more information, e-mail engagement@ccc.govt.nz or call 03 941 8999 and ask for Ruth Littlewood or Evangeline Emerenciana.
