231 Vietnamese Girls Find a Future

Our Sponsorships Open School Doors
CCI supports girls education
Girls in impoverished Vietnamese families oftentimes cannot attend school. While education there is “free,” uniforms, books, fees and required "extra tuition" tutoring classes are not. The annual cost of $240 may not sound like much, but for most farming parents who earn a dollar or two a day, the cost of school is prohibitive. Many struggling parents send a son to school and keep their daughter at home to save money or to care for the house and younger siblings.

No more! For 4 years CCI has been working with our partner, the Children’s Education Fund (CEF) in Hoi An, which now gives 231 girls-- from primary school through university -- the chance to go to school. Started by Linda Hutchinson Burn, formerly an Australian business woman who visited Vietnam in 2003, and learned that many girls don’t get an education, CEF is proving what a lot of concern and a truckload of commitment can do. This small organization is succeeding with a dedicated staff of young Vietnamese women who mentor the sponsored girls, make home visits, tend to family issues that impact the girls' school attendance, and run lifestyle workshops (on life skills, anti-trafficking education, water safety and female health and hygiene).

Through educating girls from marginalized families who would otherwise not attend school, CCI -- in partnership with CEF -- opens up a world of future opportunities. Scroll down to read the inspiring story of Thuy, one student supported by CCI.

Help Us Put More Vietnamese Girls in School

CCI's year-end goal is to raise $7,600 needed to give 20 additional girls the opportunity to attend school. This will expand CEF’s enrollment by nearly 10%. Here's how you can help us make this happen:
Meet Thuy: the picture of 2nd grade determination:

CCI supports girls educationThuy’s mom can’t afford to send her to school. She struggles to earn enough to support her 2 daughters, but her jobs, as a garment factory seamstress and a cleaner at wedding parties, are not reliable and do not pay much. And she has enormous debt (almost $1,000) related to her husband’s medical needs before he died last year.

CEF learned of Thuy’s plight and determined to take her in as one of their sponsorship students. She is a happy 2nd grader who loves school, especially math. Thuy is quite diligent about her education, especially for such a young girl, doing homework each evening.

Thuy wakes up early each morning to help her mom with household chores and to get ready for school. She already has learned the importance of discipline to help her with her goal: to become an excellent student.  Thuy’s mother was unable to finish school, and is determined that Thuy and her sister will have better future opportunities than she has, so she puts her daughter’s studies first.
