The Professional Development Committee presented two sessions in November on Budget Management (see pictures above from the Main Campus session).

Here are highlights from the presentation:
 
The University of Toledo has four funds: General fund, designated funds, auxiliary fund, restricted fund. Each fund has specific spending and fund generating parameters, indexes, as well as if they have to be set at zero every year or if they can roll over. There is much information on the website and budget and planning friends are here to help! It is a great idea to review each index and expenditure monthly just like you would your checking account; monthly reconciliation is important.

There are common budget reports in web report library to help you and your team stay on budget and show the % adjusted budget remaining. Budgets are loaded into Banner about one month prior to Fall semesters and our fiscal year (FY) runs July 1 through June 30 for the University.

There are other budget reports you can run that will also help manage grants that may need more real time information instead of FY information.

2019-20 Staff Leadership Development participants announced

Professional Staff Council would like to express a big congratulations to the PSA employees that were chosen for the 2019-2020 Staff Leadership Development program.

Twenty-five UToledo employees were recently selected by a multidisciplinary team as members of the Staff Leadership Development program’s third cohort, many of whom are PSA members.

Third-cohort PSA members include: Malaika-Beauta Bell, Office of Diversity and Inclusion; Chrissy Billau, Marketing and Communications; Keith Bitter, Information Technology; Victoria Buckley, College of Medicine and Life Sciences; Larry Carter, Marketing and Communications; Kari Dilworth, Center for Success Coaching; Jessica Faber, Academic Enrichment Center; Maggie Garcia, Facilities and Construction; Katie Himich, Department of Medicine; Michele Johnson, Office of New Student Orientation Programs; Andrew Kleinhenz, College of Medicine and Life Sciences; David Kubacki, Psychiatry; Christina Lowry, LaValley Law Library; Andrea Masters, Benefits and Wellness; Danelle Mooi, Hospital Administration; Ann Murphy, Neurology; Jeff Schneiderman, College of Medicine and Life Sciences; Allison Spencer, College of Engineering; Eric Szabo, Information Technology; Jessica Visser, Office of Legal Affairs; Lisa Yost, Student Disability Services; Mary Youngs, Office of Student Affairs; and Hesham Youssef, Emergency Medicine.

Launched in 2017, the program provides a formal pathway for high-potential employees to hone their leadership skills through monthly courses taught by senior leaders, faculty and other subject matter experts who cover a variety of higher education topics. Completing reading assignments, group activities and a capstone project also are requirements of the yearlong program.

“We’re very proud of these latest participants and wish them well as they embark on program activities throughout the coming year,” stated Wendy Davis, associate vice president and chief human resources officer. “To be selected is quite an achievement because there were many individuals again this year who applied and have great potential.”

If you applied or were nominated and did not get selected, you are strongly encouraged to apply again in future years. The next call for applicants will occur in September 2020.

Holiday Bazaar —Thank You!

Congrats to PSA member Kathy Wilson, who had one of the two winning ‘good ideas’

Nearly 150 submissions were received for the University’s Good Idea Initiative.

The new program awards and recognizes employees’ ideas that will make an impact in two categories: promoting student success through increasing graduation, retention or enrollment; and increased efficiency, process improvements or cost savings/avoidance.

One of the two winning ideas was submitted by PSA member Kathy Wilson, senior business manager in the Division of Student Affairs.

Kathy proposed an intensive training session, or boot camp, for business managers and administrative professionals who work on budgets and finance and human resource issues.

“This boot camp training would replace the current paradigm where employees either learn on the job or through trial and error,” she wrote. “The training would be intensive and detailed, and would be provided by on-campus experts, like those within the Controller’s Office, Finance and Strategy, Human Resources, and Purchasing. Training would lead to more efficiency going forward and additional opportunity to focus on the overall financial health of the division, college or department. It also would allow business managers to become better administrative partners in assisting deans and vice presidents to align existing resources with the University’s strategic plan.”

“We received so many thoughtful suggestions on ways to make UToledo more student-centered and more resourceful,” President Sharon L. Gaber said. “Thank you to all the employees who took the time to participate in the Good Idea Initiative. We are lucky to have such passionate, dedicated faculty and staff.”

The Good Idea Initiative will open again in March.

Online Master’s Cohort in Higher Education Administration

All members of the Professional Staff Association are encouraged to consider pursuing their professional development by enrolling in the UToledo Higher Education Program Online Professional Master’s Degree Program, focusing on Higher Education Administration. This 30-credit hour program is designed for professionals with two or more years of full-time higher education work experience. Students will register for one fully online eight-week course at a time, taking 6 core courses in higher education and four courses emphasizing higher education administration.

Three videoconference sessions are being offered to provide more information about this cohort on January 14, February 4 and March 3 from noon to 1 p.m. Please register for one of these information sessions. The deadline for admission for the 2020 Higher Education Administration Cohort is Friday, April 15. The PSA Scholarship Committee is pleased to invite applications for 2020-2021 academic year scholarship. Only UToledo students enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours with at least a sophomore standing (30 earned hours) and a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale should apply. Applicants must also submit the name and email address of a PSA member who can provide a recommendation, write a 500-word essay explaining why they are deserving of the award, and have a completed FAFSA on file, as financial need is a consideration. 

Applications must be completed using the online scholarship application form no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, March 20, 2020. PSA members named will automatically be sent an online recommendation form, and students will receive automatic confirmation when both their application and the PSA member’s recommendation have been received. Because these are automated processes, no paper, email, or faxed applications will be accepted. 

Please encourage all qualified students to apply for this non-college specific scholarship, which can be used to fund tuition, fees, books, or other educational expenses, and let them know they can list you as their recommender! 

Award recipients will be announced at the PSA annual meeting in May. The total amount of scholarships awarded each year is based on yearly funds available.

I celebrated my three-year anniversary with UToledo this past September. I began as a Secretary II in the College of Nursing and am currently the Assistant Director in the Office of Student Affairs for the College of Medicine and Life Sciences.
 

My job involves planning many of the exciting student-centered events that occur each year in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences:  Orientation BBQ, White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, and Commencement, just to name a few. I manage student travel and student organizations for our medical students, and will co-teach the Career Advising and Exploration courses next year.
 

UToledo is very student centered and the faculty and staff truly care for the well-being of the students. Our office focuses on being supportive of our students and connecting them with resources they may need.
