Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

What a year. Just under 8,000 people attended our ticketed season, we sold out performances faster than ever, Corner Pocket Jazz Festival returned to great crowds in thunder and rain, we covered over 4,000km on regional tours, welcomed sensational guest artists, and, most importantly, saw the development of wonderful young musicians all year long.

Phew. We all need a bit of a break!

The WAYJO office will be closed from the 20th of December until the 8th of January, but we'll be back in the New Year, getting ready to launch our sensational 2020 season, Homegrown.

We hope you all have a wonderful holiday period with family and friends.

Young Women in Jazz 2020

Give a young lady the gift of Jazz this Christmas

WAYJO is calling for young women aged 14 to 25, interested in playing or studying jazz or improvised music, to take part in workshops to collaborate, learn and network with fellow female musicians.

Young Women in Jazz is an 8-week series of Saturday workshops, commencing 2 May 2020. Conducted in small groups with leading guest artists (including touring vocalist Kristin Berardi and pianist/composer Judy Bailey), educators and WAYJO alumnae, these workshops build support networks, refine skills and increase performer confidence.

A final public performance, held at the Ellington Jazz Club on Sunday 21 June, will showcase the participants newly acquired skills in a professional jazz venue setting.

Run in Perth since 2014, and developed in 2002 by Sydney Improvised Music Association (SIMA) and Dr. Sandy Evans OAM, the workshops are specifically designed to inspire young women to play jazz and pursue a future in music.

WAYJO acknowledges program partners SIMA (Sydney Improvised Music Association) as well as St John of God Health Care for their continued support of the program here in Western Australia.

Did you know ticket sales account for only 20% of our income?

Every year, we try to offer as many opportunities as we can for our young musicians and young people across the state. To do that, we need to raise funds, and our wonderful donors, sponsors and funders always come to the party.

If every one of our attendees at performances in 2019 donated $20, the funds generated would be our most significant source of income, by a long way.

To help us deliver on our 2020 program, we ask that you consider making a donation to WAYJO this Christmas. Every donation is tax deductible, and you can even set up a regular donation of as little as $5 a month.

Every donation and dollar is much appreciated and goes directly towards funding our annual program.
