Dear <<Name>>

Since our latest DUAL Ports Newsletter, we have visited the Port of Hvide Sande on the 9th and the 10th of December. They hosted the WAVE/HYDROGEN/HEAT Workshop. 14 expert speakers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Scotland presented us to their work and experiences within the fields of wave technology, the future of hydrogen, possibilities of zero-emission heat production among other topics. More than 50 participants found their way to the congress centre in Hvide Sande.

Christian Byrith, CEO at Interreg North Sea Region, also joined the workshop as speaker and participant and enlightened us about the future of the Interreg-program in a world after Brexit.

Cooperation between the port and the city of Hvide Sande, supporting energy efficiency

Hvide Sande in Denmark is quite a special town at the Westcoast of Denmark in between the fjord and the North Sea. Considering the fantastic landscape and nature, it has become a very popular tourist destination.
In order to improve their sustainability, the port, the city, the heat company and other local organisations work together to set up a city energy and heating system for the whole town.

Energy from wind and sun generate enough energy to produce sufficient volumes of heat to be distributed within the city.

A strong business case has been identified and smart technologies and innovation are used to secure the management of the integrated energy system.

SME ports are not only logistic centers, but also smart energy-hubs offering services to the local community.

DOCKLAND
Optimal land-use, industrial co-siting, prime logistic location, shared facilities and shared costs are some of the elements that DOCKLAND can offer to companies.

DOCKLAND is a clustered and sustainable co-siting environment of 100.000 m2 land at the Port of Oostende, Belgium. An overarching environmental permit and safety policy, shared infrastructure, facilities and logistics lead to optimized cost and opportunities for circular initiatives which also help to lower barriers that prevent businesses from development and growth.

Therefore, the pilot project DOCKLAND does not only provide a green port with optimal logistics but also an area with possibilities of network, development and support - guaranteed opportunities for accelerated entrepreneurial growth within port areas.

DUAL Ports presented at INTERREG Annual Conference
Niedersachsen Ports participated and presented our DUAL Ports project at INTERREG Annual Conference in Bremen.

"How can we work successfully in the North Sea Region?" This was the overall question of the conference with more than 150 participants on November 12th 2019 in Bremen. The focus of the discussion related to the added value of the European network for local development. Amongst the participants, there were a large consensus: European cooperation creates added value for municipalities, regions, NGO's, SME ports and local entreprises. In this way, local issues can be overcome through cross-country cooperation.

The challenges of the climate changes require a joint effort. Transnational cooperation is therefore significantly important for the North Sea Region in order to become a sustainable, innovative, effective, competitive and attractive area in constant development.

Merry Christmas!
DUAL Ports wishes you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Christmas is only a few days away and the year 2019 has soon passed. For DUAL Ports, 2019 has been a year of progress in renewable and sustainable energy solution at ports.

2019 has been a challenging and interesting year. Activities, research and insights stressed that ports are more than logistic operators. They also function as energy-hubs with the opportunity for multi-energy production using the ports location, infrastructure and surrounding nature as the business case from Port of Hvide Sande illustrates.

In 2019, the close cooperation between SME ports, the industry and research institutions within the Interreg DUAL Ports project has continued to work intensely on exploring the possibilities of each pilot project and support responsible growth. Innovation and technology development is growing and it is continuously revealing the many opportunities of the sustainability of port operational and administration resources for the future.

We look very much forward to even better work and new insights to come in 2020, notwithstanding the opposition of some government administrations.

We wish you and your families a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We hope that you will also join us next year where we will continue our many activities towards decarbonizing ports.

Love sincerely,
