Letter from New President Jeff Gaylord

As we head into 2020, I wanted to share of few of my visions and goals for Alpha Nu Omega.

Alpha Nu Omega has undergone a remarkable evolution in the past 60 years as we’ve pursued our vision to be the most outstanding fraternity on UMD's campus. But one of the most profound changes I have witnessed over the past decade has been the richer understanding of—and deeper commitment to—service.  This that has come into focus as we have refined our views of what it means to be a fraternity on campus and how to give back to our fellow man.

What is clearer than ever before, though, is that we cannot achieve success as an organization if we choose to continue to pursue this evolution independently.  Rather, success requires that we consistently work to achieve our vision through integrated initiatives bringing both the active chapter and the alumni association together.

In keeping with the spirit of service, I invite you—and indeed encourage you—to share in the evolution that we are witnessing by contributing to our social events, scholarship funds, and volunteer collaborations with the active chapter.  The more we can participate as a cohesive and integrated organization, the stronger we will become.

Alpha Scholarships

Providing scholarships to worthy members of our Alpha active chapter is the primary mission of the Alumni Association. To date Alpha has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships.

Our scholarship application process has now been transferred into the hands of Kirby and Greek Life. This has provided substantially more visibility to the only Greek chapter at UMD that provides scholarship assistance. Below is a photo of our treasurer Jason Golde presenting a $5000 check to Tori Seymour of UMD Greek Life to be added to our Scholarship Fund.

Our Scholarship Fund Needs Increased Revenue

Alpha Nu Omega is the only fraternity on campus that has scholarships offered to its worthy members.  It is a strong recruiting mechanism to get quality members with academic strength.

Tuition continues to increase beyond our ability to supply adequate scholarship awards to members of our active chapter.  Our organization needs your support to continue our work.  While we need your dues to continue to operate the Alumni Association, dues alone cannot support our scholarship effort.

The Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association Scholarship Fund is being managed by the University with matching funds that are very beneficial, but it still needs our donations to match.  We therefore ask that you consider a generous tax deductible donation, especially before the end of the year. 2019.

We will also be soliciting consideration for the Alpha Scholarship Fund in your estate planning that has already been engaged by several members.  There can even be a direct donation from an IRA.

Methods to Pay Your 2019 Dues and Donations
  • Donation Using Our Alpha Alumni Website
JUST CLICK THE "DONATE" IMAGE AND YOU WILL BE DIRECTED TO OUR WEBSITE "DUES AND DONATIONS" PAGE WHERE YOU WILL BE GIVEN PAYMENT OPTIONS (BOTH BY CHECK OR CREDIT):

  • UMD Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association Scholarship Direct Donation

You can also give directly by credit card to the UMD Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Scholarship fund at:

You will get a year end receipt from UMD for tax purposes and the fund will be included in your annual giving reminder.

Your scholarship committee is happy to report the award of three scholarships for the academic year 2019-2020:

Here is a thumbnail sketch of our three recipients.

John L. Banks recipient Lucas Koecher ($4000)

Lucas is a Kerrick, Minnesota native, who graduated from Barnum High School. In high school Lucas was a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the Barnum High School golf team, lettering also in cross country and basketball. Lucas is very active in music, playing the saxophone with the high school jazz, pep and concert bands. He was also active in theater and the Knowledge Bowl. Lucas majors in biology. His cumulative grade point average is 3.474. In college life Lucas is a member of the UMD Pep Band, involved in intramural curling, and has served as the Alpha Nu Omega Treasurer. He has been very active in UMD Greek Life, participating in all of their events. Lucas has been active in Alpha becoming more involved, and prominent in Greek Life. He has been elected to the Greek Life secretary position for the 2019-2020 school year.

John L. Banks recipient Alejandro Ploetz ($4000)

The second John L. Banks Scholarship was awarded to Alejandro Ploetz. Alejandro’s cumulative grade point average is 3.563, earning him the active chapter academic award. Alejandro is a native of Savage, Minnesota, majoring in biology. He served as service chairman for the active chapter.

Daryl B. Knodt recipient Eric Franzwa ($2500)

Eric Franzwa is an excellent fit for the Daryl Brooks Knodt Scholarship, as he has been very active in the leadership of the fraternity, serving as social chairman and vice president. Eric is enrolled in the Labowitz School of Business and Economics. His emphasis is in management information systems. Eric has a cumulative grade point average of 2.705.
Alpha Active Chapter News

The Active Chapter continues to grow and has returned to a prominent force on a campus.  It is still the only local fraternity among the national chapters. They currently have 16 members and are brimming with quality brothers that are exhibiting excellent leadership. This has been particularly noticed by the Kirby Leadership and Greek Life Administration.

Activities this year have focused the members on academics, but they did take time to join in en mass at our 60th reunion held in Duluth.

This fall they initiated five new members and plan to rush and pledge again next semester.

Amendments to the Alpha Alumni Association Charter

Our Charter needs revisions to shore up the expected conduct of scholarship recipients during their year of award and a general code of member conduct requested by the University.

Below is a copy of our Charter with red-lined highlights reflecting revisions recommended by the Board.

2019 Charter Revisions

In particular see Article VI of the Constitution and Article III Section F of the By-Laws
