Season's Greetings from ABC Life Literacy Canada

On behalf of the team at ABC Life Literacy Canada, we want to wish you the very best for the holiday season and beyond! Thank you for helping us achieve success in bringing literacy skills and opportunities to individuals and groups across Canada. For this we are truly grateful and excited by what we can achieve together throughout 2020!

Community Profile: Toronto shelter helps marginalized women develop digital literacy skills

Street Haven Toronto at the CrossRoads is a community organization offering pathways for women who are experiencing or are at-risk of homelessness. This is just one of the many organizations hosting a series of workshops aimed at helping adults improve their digital literacy skills.

Street Haven offers a variety of provisions for women including shelter and housing services, an addictions program, and academic and pre-employment services. The latter service offers academic upgrading in a classroom setting as well as pre-employment workshops, individual counselling and computer access program.

While the computer access program is available Monday to Friday, the women weren’t fully able to tap into the resources available to them.

Why? Because they had a skills gap when it came to using technology.

Family Literacy Day is coming up!

Next month, the 21st annual Family Literacy Day (FLD) will take place across Canada on January 27, 2020. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. This year, families are encouraged to "Take 20 in 2020" – that is, take 20 minutes a day throughout the year to make learning together part of their everyday.

Please take a few moments to let us know what you have planned for Family Literacy Day 2020 by registering your event and don't forget to download our FREE resources!

Encourage kids to learn at home over the holidays

We’re all familiar with the ‘summer slide’, but the winter holiday break can also cause learning loss for school-aged children, who will spend more than two weeks off school later this month.

Help prevent learning loss and ensure kids return sharper than ever by encouraging family literacy activities over the school break. Oftentimes, parents take time off work as well, which means it’s the perfect opportunity for them to spend quality time learning together as a family.

We have a whole catalogue of family literacy activities available for free online at www.FamilyLiteracyFirst.ca. All you have to do is create an account!
