Dixon Campus

The mission of the International School of Louisiana is to provide a challenging education emphasizing language immersion, international awareness, the celebration of diversity and community responsibility.
Language All Around

Here’s a question that I’ve heard over and over from ISL parents: How can I
help my child learn to read in a target language that I don’t speak? The
research on immersion education offers a clear answer. When you teach
children to read in their native language, you’re building basic skills
that they can transfer to other languages. Learning an alphabet,
recognizing spelling patterns, blending sounds to make words — these are
muscles you flex whether you’re reading in English, French, or Spanish.

Of course, the skills you work on will depend on your child’s age. Teach
kindergarteners letter names and sounds, and play games that develop
their phonemic awareness /sightwords.com/phonemic-awareness/basics/>. (Phonemic awareness is your ability to recognize and manipulate sounds. It includes skills like finding rhymes or identifying the first sound in a word.) First
graders should be sounding out simple words, memorizing common sight words /sightwords.com/sight-words/>, and starting to read short texts. In
second grade, many students get comfortable enough with reading that they
start doing it for enjoyment. Get them some fun books! The Magic Tree House and Dog Man are English-language series that are popular with Dixon students.

In short, teach what you know. If you work with your kids in the language
you speak at home, you’ll give them the tools they need to be successful in immersion.

Family Liaison Corner
It is important to respect the community by obeying street and parking regulations. We have met with the Hollygrove-Dixon Association and expressed that as good neighbors and community members, we will respect the 20 mph speed limit, park where permitted, we will not block  driveways or park on corners, and will be mindful of walking students and through traffic.

SIBLING APPLICATION FOR THE
2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR

Dear Parent/Guardian,

ISL will begin accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year on November 22, 2019.  Please remember that sibling preference is available to siblings of currently enrolled ISL students whose application is submitted by the deadline and who apply to the campus in which the current sibling is enrolled (Uptown siblings applying for K-2 can choose to apply to Dixon and/or West Bank Campus.).  The deadline to apply for
 K-1st grade is January 31, 2020. Application deadline for 2nd-8th is January 15, 2020.

* Sibling preference will be granted only if the current ISL student attends ISL for the 2020-2021 school year.

  1. Families can apply online at www.EnrollNOLA.org  on November 22, 2019. The application deadline for K-1st grade is January 31, 2020 and January 15, 2019 for 2nd-8th grade.
  • Please make sure to link the current ISL student to the sibling so that the child receives sibling preference.
  • Prospective candidates must rank ISL as their first choice to receive Sibling Preference.
  • ISL does not have a wait list.  Once families are notified of placement, it is assumed they will accept the placement.
  • Prospective students in Grades 2nd through 8th will be admitted only if they are appropriately experienced in their language of study and successfully pass an entrance exam in the target language (French or Spanish).
  • Children must be five years of age by September 30, 2020 in order to enter Kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year.
