AT&T Foundation contribution to support Embark Georgia network

A $25,000 contribution from the AT&T Foundation will help the J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development increase college access and retention for youth who have experienced foster care or homelessness.

 
UGA Students spend fall break helping Grady County residents recover

Students in the IMPACT-UGA program recently spent their fall break helping the residents of Cairo, GA, where residents are still recovering after experiencing both a hurricane and tornado in the past year.

The group's trip to Grady county came through a collaboration between the Center for Leadership and Service and the Archway Partnership, who leveraged the existing IMPACT program to make a positive mark in the state of Georgia in line with the University’s Great Commitments recommendation.

SBDC's Contractor Academy supports local businesses

Rashe Malcolm, chef and owner of Rashe’s Cuisine, is seeing the benefits of the Small Business Development Center's Contractor Academy. The program provides resources for small businesses — from caterers to real estate developers — looking to work with larger corporations or government agencies.

Fifth annual UGA Day of Service benefits local nonprofits and agencies

More than 200 UGA Public Service and Outreach employees planted flowers, organized books, walked dogs and reconstructed a middle school garden in Athens-Clarke County as a part of the 2019 PSO Day of Service. Volunteers participated in service projects at 14 sites, contributing about 385 hours of service to the local community.
 
SBDC employee receives PSO Employee Spotlight Award


Carolina Ramon, director of the Office of Minority Business Development for the UGA Small Business Development Center, was presented with the second Public Service and Outreach Employee Spotlight Award on Dec. 6.

Dan Williams, Assistant Director of Development in Public Service and Outreach, was one of four staff members who recently took home the Sic 'Em award from UGA Development & Alumni Relations — honoring him for going above and beyond in embodying the values of Servant Leadership, Innovation and Commitment.

Recipients received a silver Bulldog with a red collar and personalized tag commemorating this honor. Winners also received a framed certificate and letter from DAR leaders, Kelly Kerner and Jay Stroman.

Student-run juvenile court judges cases of first-time offenders

Peer Court looks similar to traditional courts, but with a key difference—all the roles are filled by teenagers. The J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development partnered with ACC Juvenile Court System to create the program, which teaches leadership skills while holding youth offenders accountable with community service.

GIKI and State Botanical Garden partner on pollinator garden at Coile Middle School

Grow It Know It VISTA Emma Courson, based at Coile Middle School, is partnering with State Botanical Garden Conservation Outreach Coordinator Lauren Muller and a Keep Athens Clarke County Beautiful education specialist to replant the school's pollinator garden.

The new garden will be planted and managed by students in the Coile agriculture science program in an effort to make them more aware of the importance of conserving native pollinators.
The right ingredients from SBDC lead to healthy growth for Augusta meal prep business

Former firefighter and nurse Onnie Sanford created her healthy meal prep business, Paleo Num Yum, following her strong desire to recover her fitness and energy after childbirth. With help from the Small Business Development Center, the business has grown more than 200% in the past year.

Institute, SPIA help establish Government Finance Officers Association student chapter

UGA recently formed only the third Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) student chapter in the country, sponsored by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and the UGA School of Public and International Affairs. The UGA student chapter held its first meeting Oct. 24 with 12 students, many of whom are SPIA master of public administration candidates. The founding president, Ted Moeller, is a graduate research assistant with the Institute of Government.
