ANU Press Newsletter: December 2019

Dear readers,

Welcome to our last newsletter for 2019, what an extremely busy and exciting year we have had! We have published 47 titles with a few more to go before Christmas. Thanks to our wonderful authors, the Press now has over 860 titles in the catalogue.

The Press continues to experience a huge response to its publications, with over 3 million downloads at the end of November – we will surpass last year’s record-breaking total of 3.17 million by the end of the year.

Some of our highlights this year include publishing Rosalie Gascoigne A Catalogue Raisonné, the first catalogue raisonné of Rosalie Gascoigne’s work. This impressive feat, undertaken by her son Martin, took 20 years to complete.

Books

We are also very proud that two of our books were nominated for book prizes including Teaching ‘Proper’ Drinking? Clubs and pubs in Indigenous Australia, which was shortlisted for the 2019 Chief Minster’s Northern Territory History Book Award, and Grappling with the Bomb Britain’s Pacific H-bomb Tests, shortlisted for the 26th Educational Publishing Awards.

Our social media channels are also taking off. We joined Instagram this year and have had a great response with 848 followers; Twitter and Facebook also continue to generate a good response from readers and authors alike.

New staff member

Our new marketing and communications coordinator has joined us just in time for the Christmas celebrations. Vanessa Rouse started with the Press on Monday, 16 December. She has a strong marketing background and is currently studying her Masters at the College of Asia and the Pacific at ANU. Welcome Vanessa!

Vanessa replaces Julia Boyd, who left us in October after a very successful and busy time with us. We wish Julia the best of luck in the future.

Festive Season

ANU Press will be closed from Tuesday 24 December 2019, and will reopen on Thursday, 2 January 2020. Please note that book orders placed during December are unlikely to arrive before Christmas as printers are particularly busy at this time of year.

A big thank you to our Editorial Board members and our authors for all their hard work in 2019, and we hope you have a happy and safe festive period. Best wishes for the new year!

Best wishes for the new year!

Power and Diplomatic Agency in Pacific Regionalism

Since its origins in late–eighteenth-century European thought, the idea of placing a regional frame around the Pacific islands has never been just an exercise in geographical mapping. This imagining of the Pacific has always been a political exercise. Contending regional projects and visions have been part of a political struggle concerning how Pacific islanders should live their lives.

Framing the Islands tells the story of power and diplomatic agency in Pacific regionalism against the backdrop of changing world order since the colonial period and of changing politics within the post-colonial states of the Pacific. The book argues that Pacific regionalism has been politically significant for Pacific island states and societies. It demonstrates the power associated with the regional arena as a valued site for the negotiation of global ideas and processes around regional development, resource management, security, cultural identity, political agency and climate change.

Author, Greg Fry, also demonstrates the political significance associated with the role of Pacific regionalism as a diplomatic bloc in global affairs, and as a producer of powerful policy norms attached to funded programs. He challenges the expectation that Pacific regionalism largely serves hegemonic powers and that small islands states have little diplomatic agency in these contests.

Book Launches

The Spanish translation of Protected Area Governance and Management was a collaboration between ANU Press, the Colombian National Park Service and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and was launched on 15 October at the 3rd Latin American and Caribbean Congress on Protected Areas in Lima, Peru.

‘So, allow me to congratulate Associate Professor Greg Fry on what is not only a remarkable academic achievement, but a work of political significance for our region’ – very special comment from Dame Meg Taylor as she launched Framing the Islands: Power and Diplomatic Agency in Pacific Regionalism at ANU, on 12 November.
