It’s coming up to the end of the year, and what a busy year it’s been in Hobart! I wrapped up my first year as Lord Mayor and marked the occasion with eleven ‘Mayor in the Chair’ sessions in six days around Hobart’s suburbs. Thanks to everyone who came along, we had lots of great conversations, ideas, complaints and feedback.
The City of Hobart has covered a lot of ground in the last twelve months. I’m particularly proud of our work against the war on waste with our Food Organic and Garden Organic (FOGO) collection and in also becoming the first Australian city to introduce a by-law to ban single use plastic. We have also been proactive in tackling the homelessness issue in our city. We convened a mid-year Homelessness Forum where major organisations involved met with the State and Federal Ministers for Housing and resulted in an extra $5 million in funding and the forming of an alliance to tackle the crisis going forward.

It’s been a big year, and while I am looking forward to a relaxing break with family and friends I am also conscious that there are those in our community who don’t get this luxury. I thank the many health care, hospitality, and emergency service workers who work hard to keep us safe and happy over the festive season.
