Students Cap Season of Giving with the Donation of 4,500 Pounds of Food

The Brookings-Harbor Food Bank received 4,500 pounds in food donations from the Bruins —thanks in great part to the efforts of Kalmiopsis students and their families. BHHS Leadership students organized the drive and unloaded the donations Monday, Dec. 17, at the Brookings Harbor Community Helpers Emergency Food Bank. The class with the most donations district-wide was Ms. Kyla Siri's third-grade class.

BHHS Leadership students took the lead in several fundraising and donation drives this fall:

  • During the annual American Red Cross blood drive in October, fifty-four units of blood were donated, surpassing the initial goal of forty-three units. These units, many given by BHHS students and staff, were then distributed among at least five hospitals across Oregon and Washington.
  • Sixty boxes of clothes, school supplies, and other necessities were sent to orphans in third world countries via Operation Christmas Child.
  • BHHS Leadership wrote letters to local veterans, thanking them for their service to our country. Twenty-two veterans living in a Lebanon retirement home were also written letters by Leadership and given donations for their holiday Christmas stockings.
  • BHHS Leadership Students on the Doernbecher Committee have raised almost $2,200 for Katelyn’s Cause over the past three months via Powder Puff Football, Powder Tuff Volleyball, sales of concessions at home football games, and participation in the local ChariTree event (during which BHHS trees raised funds for both Katelyn’s Cause and OASIS House).
Thank you, community members, volunteers and fellow Bruin students for the participation in and support of these efforts.

AMS students Turkey Trot before Thanksgiving holiday

The "Turkey Trot" is an intra-school field day tradition. This year it took place on Friday, Nov. 22, during the last hour of the school day before the week-long Thanksgiving Break. All AMS students joined in the fun at Elmer Bankus Field. There was music, dancing and cheering in the stands. The main event is a 1.1 mile run around a portion of the school district. While participants ran in grade level and teacher/staff categories, a number of other events were happening in front of the grandstands such as pie-eating and squash bowling. Prizes for the 'trot' winners for girls and boys at each grade level were 1st place - Frozen Turkey; 2nd place - Pumpkin Pie; and 3rd place - bag of spuds.

Read more about it in the Curry Coastal Pilot's Nov. 28 article "Turkey Trot: First, there's pie!"

Local, state and national grants awarded to Bruins

Wild Rivers Community Foundation

Thank you Wild Rivers Community Foundation and donors for the generous $500 Holiday Partnership mini-grant for the Brookings-Harbor High School Youth Transition Program (YTP) to create canned cranberries for donation to local food programs, and funds to create a Thanksgiving tamale feast! Wild Rivers Community Foundation awarded $22,000 in grants Wednesday, Dec. 4, to 29 nonprofit organizations, agencies and churches that provide thousands of children and adults in Curry and Del Norte counties with much-needed food, clothing, gifts, companionship, and other services.

Dollar General Youth Literacy Grant

Many thanks to Dollar General Literacy Foundation for awarding Brookings-Harbor School District a Dollar General Youth Literacy Grant for 2019 of $1000. These DG grants were announced in September and provide $2.8 million to organizations across 44 states to support youth literacy initiatives during the 2019-2020 academic year. BHSD is one of the only six organizations from Oregon to receive this competitive nationwide grant.

The funds will be used to purchase copies of the illustrated children’s book “30 Minutes Over Oregon” for all students in the 5th grade as part of a local history project culminating with events with community members, local historians, and high school history and social studies classes. An Orbis Pictus Honor Book for Outstanding Nonfiction 2019, “30 Minutes Over Oregon” is a story of war and reconciliation. It tells the story of Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita who dropped bombs in the woods outside Brookings during WW2, the events that brought him back to visit twenty years later, and the enduring connection to Brookings. If you or your organization is interested in learning more, please contact Brookings-Harbor High School social studies teacher Kelly Garvin at kellyg@brookings.k12.or.us or District Librarian Patty Clark at patriciac@brookings.k12.or.us.

Brookings-Harbor Education Foundation

Many thanks to Brookings Harbor Education Foundation for a grant donation of $1,000 to purchase metal for student welding and fabrication projects in the Brookings-Harbor High School metals lab. This generous grant will be spent locally to provide raw materials that students can create with, and will support student success in learning new skills working with metals and welding.

Since September, BHEF has provided more than $1,900 in grants to Brookings-Harbor School District classrooms and programs. In addition to the recent donation to Chris Thompson’s welding and metals classes at BHHS, there have also been mini-grants to help purchase robotics “Bots” kits for Jennifer Bietschek’s math classes at Azalea Middle School, tree planting materials for K’la Kennedy and Kelly Margolis’ kindergarten classes at Kalmiopsis Elementary, and further support for prizes and materials for the district-wide Oregon Battle of the Books program coordinated by District Librarian Patty Clark and her team.

Oregon Community Foundation (Ben and Kathy Nolan Fund)

Thank you to the Oregon Community Foundation for a grant of $2,456.94 to the Brookings-Harbor High School Robotics Team on Dec. 2 via the Ben and Kathy Nolan Fund. They add to a long list of supporters for the 2019-2020 FIRST competition season. Additional grants and gifts the team has received this fall include:
  • Boeing Grant - $3,000
  • ORTOP / Argosy Grant - $2,200 (including future commitments totaling $5,000)
  • First Tech Credit Union (Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Grant) - $1,000
  • ODE / ORTOP (Oregon Robotics Tournament & Outreach Program) - $3,500
  • A $3,000 community donation from local business Kayavo.
Go Bruins!

The Gift and the Challenge

I often think back on a newspaper clipping that my mother sent me in my early years of teaching. It was a circle from "The Family Circus" comic by Bil Keane depicting big sister giving some advice to little brother: "Yesterday's the past, tomorrow's the future, but today is a GIFT. That's why it is called the present."

The work we do in education is not easy. As educators, the gift we have is the next transaction with a student, parent or community member. It can be hard not to let our previous negative experiences impact that next conversation -- especially with so many demands on our time, energy and resources.

Yet, the cumulative effect of small daily actions can be profound. As a district and a community, we must do everything we can to remain student-focused at all times and in all decisions. We have the opportunity to encourage, challenge, and create positive connections for students at every step along the way.

At Brookings-Harbor School District, our mission is to cultivate a safe, highly effective, and collaborative learning environment where every student can succeed. Making this a reality requires a commitment to an ongoing process and doing it in partnership with students, parents, staff, and the community.

Since I joined the district this fall, our BHSD leadership teams have analyzed past assessment and student data and gathered feedback from a new community survey, as well as staff and student surveys. Using insights from this process, we have prioritized two keystone goals: 1. Improve graduation rates; and 2. Improve attendance.

The district submitted a draft Continuous Improvement Plan to the state earlier this month which maps out targets as well as potential sub-goals and strategies for the coming years. The plan requires a commitment to building data-driven teams and routines; centering relationships and resources for students; implementing needed investments and systems changes; and, continuing to communicate with and engage the community in the improvement process. It's an instrument of accountability, but the true proof will be how we can create a culture that keeps students wanting to come to school.

At the end of the day, I truly believe what Frederick Douglass said a long time ago, that “It’s easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” I have challenged our teachers and staff to be instruments of inspiration for our students -- to be effective with the conversations that we have in order to help students buy-in to the value of their education and training. Our jobs are tough because we serve all children, and they are trying to find a place to feel safe, to feel loved, to feel valued. Our jobs are tough because we must create that welcoming and inclusive space -- it’s the gift and the challenge.

We are grateful to everyone in the community who shared their concerns and dreams for the district this fall. We appreciate our volunteer leaders, including the elected School Board of Directors, District Leadership Team, school SITE Councils, and others for their collaborative work and support of our schools. We look forward to more conversations in 2020! I can be reached with email, by calling 541-469-7443 or by stopping by the District Office at 564 Fern Ave., Brookings.

Sincerely,

Chris Eberhardt, Interim Superintendent

Updates from District Nurse Trish

It has been shown that healthy students have improved academic success, and miss fewer school days. The results of our annual fall health screenings assist our educators to understand the needs of individual students so that we can work together with families to help them succeed.

This fall, we had a number of screenings complete, and here are the results:

At Kalmiopsis Elementary School 452 students received dental screenings donated by Advantage Dental, compared to 536 students who were screened last year. The dental screening rates at Azalea Middle School and Brookings-Harbor High School are historically low, but participation rates improved by approximately 15% this year. Advantage Dental screened 32 students at BHHS and 33 students at AMS during Fall 2019. Results were mailed to student's homes.

South Coast Educational Services District hosted hearing screenings is for all kindergarten through third graders and any new students in grades 4 and 5.  In total, 467 students were screened and 10 students needed follow-up testing. This is a 97.9% pass rate.

Vision screenings hosted by the Brookings Harbor Lions Club were also completed. We screen all Kalmiopsis students, 7th graders, and 10th graders.  The Lions screened 663 students at K-school with 84 students needing follow-up (12.7% referral rate); 99 students at Azalea with 7 students needing follow-up (7.1% referral rate); and 107 students at BHHS with 9 students needing follow-up (8.4% referral rate). Results of vision screenings were mailed home. The Lions Club has a fund that can pay for follow-up appointments and glasses for families in need.

Finally, don’t forget that it’s still flu season, you can find information about preventing and treating the flu at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/.

Have a happy and safe winter break. If you have any questions, please contact me at patriciaw@brookings.k12.or.us.
