It's been a long time between drinks...

December 2019

You may have noticed that this past year has not been my most prolific in terms of writing, but I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things.

I was delighted to write a Christmas story as part of the Rainbow Advent Calendar, organised by the indefatigable Alex Jane. Not that my story Rock Paper Water features your "regular" Christmas, as it's set in Australia in summer at a camping ground, and there's not a shred of tinsel in sight. I hope you'll give it a try - and if it's not quite to your taste, I'm certain that you'll soon find something that is, by browsing all the pressies available from the wonderful authors participating.

In other news, I'm proud to announce I'll be attending the GLO - Gay Lit Oz event in Sydney in March 2021. And I was delighted to see a male-male romance win in the Romance and Debut Novel categories in the Goodreads Choice Awards 2019!

Rock Paper Water

Blurb: Daniel and Aron are both 17 and go to the same school in Canberra. There the similarities end. But when their families meet at the Yadboro campsite, the two young men are expected to hang out together. They still don't have much in common, but their differences might be more interesting than either had anticipated...

Genre: LGBTQ fiction; gay and pan characters; young adult; contemporary; Australia; Christmas; short story

Word count: 3,600

Written for the Rainbow Advent Calendar 2019, with thanks to Alex Jane for organising this festive event!

GLO - Gay Lit Oz

GLO is Australia's own LGBT+ genre Author Event, being held in Sydney on 12-13 March 2021. I'm delighted to be attending as an author, and I'd love to meet you there!

Although I've been living back in Oz for over a year now, we've been very focussed on setting up and settling into a new home in a new community. During my 14-year absence in the UK, it's obvious that the LGBTQ genre here in Australia has grown beyond anything I dared dream of. Which is absolutely awesome, but obviously I have a lot of catching up to do!

You can glimpse some of the attending authors in this graphic... and that's not the end of it, either! Announcements of new authors are made weekly in the GLO Facebook group.

Please do join us, whether virtually or in person. You can find all the details care of the GLO website here.

Goodreads Choice Awards 2019

I was happy to recommend the novel Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston in a mid-2019 newsletter. Now I'm thrilled to see that it has won in both the Romance and Debut Novel categories of the Goodreads Choice Awards! I think that is just awesome.

The story is a bit of a fantasy, with some of the details of British royalty being not quite right, even allowing for this alternate post-Victoria branch of the family. For that matter, I suspect the representation of the American political system and life in the White House isn't entirely grounded in reality either.

But worrying too much about these matters obscures the point - which is that the novel is goodhearted, charming, and an awful lot of fun. The politics are progressive - another fantasy element, but a very welcome one, especially today! And the whole thing has the broad appeal of a true romantic comedy, which is almost certain to burst into the mainstream and seduce everyone possible. Hurrah!

Blurb: A big-hearted romantic comedy in which the First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales after an incident of international proportions forces them to pretend to be best friends...

First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.

The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.

As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?

My Facebook group

I have a Facebook group for my friends, readers and fellow travellers, called Life, Libraries, Love and Knitting. We are a small group of BFFs so far, with a fairly low-key dynamic - while I want to keep the atmosphere relaxed and informal, I would love for more of you to join us!

As you'll gather from the group's name, I don't intend this to be all about me and my writing, but instead about anything in life that we love, whether that's knitting or not!

Please do click the link and ask to join. As required by Facebook, there are rules to agree to and questions to answer - but seeing as that's part of their efforts to keep interactions civil, I hope you won't find it too onerous.

We'd love to see you there!
