SRI Awards Two Grants in 2019

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we awarded two grants for research on SCAD, totaling $165,000 in 2019. This brings our total donation to SCAD research, since our inception in 2011, to $965,000!
This year’s grant recipients are:

  • Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program
  • Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation

Background Information
Mayo Clinic was the first and only institution that had begun a research program, focused exclusively on SCAD, when SCAD Research, Inc. (SRI) started in 2011. We are thrilled by the progress that has been made at Mayo Clinic under the leadership of Dr. Sharonne Hayes with the financial support of SRI.

Mayo Clinic
To ensure that Mayo Clinic can continue its ongoing internationally recognized research on SCAD in 2020, our 2019 grant to the Mayo Clinic SCAD Research Program is $150,000. A significant portion of the money donated to Mayo Clinic has been used to generate very expensive data to learn more about the role of genetics in SCAD.

As a result of the publications from Mayo Clinic, interest in SCAD has grown and additional facilities have also begun to study SCAD.  Recognizing the value of having additional research groups study SCAD, the SRI Board decided to offer a new grant up to $25,000 to another research program. This additional opportunity for a grant was announced on Facebook and in our e-newsletters.

Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation
We received only one grant application from the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF), under the leadership of Dr. Scott Sharkey, to evaluate the long-term outcomes of SCAD patients treated with stents and bypass surgery.  We are pleased to announce a $15,000 grant to the MHIF to fund this study.

While we had set a hefty goal to have donated a total of one million dollars by the end of 2019, we know that we will far exceed one million dollars by the end of 2020!

Thank you to everyone who made this year’s grants possible.

SCAD Angels & the Holidays
The loss of a loved one is difficult anytime. It is even more so during the holidays when so much focus is on celebrating with family and friends.

Several years ago, we established a
SCAD Angels Facebook group for families who lost someone to SCAD.

If you have lost someone to SCAD and haven’t already joined, please join our SCAD Angel group. It is a small, closed group administered by Susan Edelman & Jan Saillard who lost their loved ones to SCAD. You can participate as much or as little as you like.

Please contact
scadinfo@scadresearch.org if you have any questions/concerns.
