Symposium on Scientific Development of Food Packaging : Innovation, Safety and Sustainability
September 24-25, 2019, Penang, Malaysia
Food Packaging plays an integral role in providing safe, nutritious and sustainable food supply to the global consumers. Advances in innovative technologies, changing consumption trends and consumer preferences have led to the development of an array of food packaging materials used for food products and by the food services industry. However, there are now increasing awareness and concerns on the development and widespread use of non-degradable food packaging materials that have led to negative environmental impacts. Concerted efforts are now ongoing by government, industry, and researchers to help address and reduce the utilization and impact of such non-degradable food contact materials.
This two-day symposium, organized by ILSI SEA Region and ILSI SEA Region Malaysia Country Committee, together with the Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQD), Ministry of Health, Malaysia as the co-organizer, discussed safety evaluation of food contact materials, provided insights on microbial control for safe food packaging and innovations, shared updates on food contact materials regulations in Asia Pacific Region and outlined the sustainable food packaging initiatives.
The detailed summary report will be made available online soon. Meanwhile, click here for the e-abstract book.

Seminar on Recycled Food Packaging: Scientific Advances and Regulatory Development
September 26, 2019, Bangkok, Thailand
The increasing production and use of plastic in our daily lives causes severe environmental problems. In the context of packaging, the approaches to reduce the demand for virgin plastic have been developed and are already applied to different extents. These strategies include reduction of packaging weight and volume, reuse of packaging and recycling of certain polymers. The ILSI SEA Region and ILSI SEA Region Thailand Country Committee organized the Seminar on Recycled Food Packaging: Scientific Advances and Regulatory Development on September 26, 2019, in Bangkok, Thailand, together with the co-organizer, Thailand Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA). This meeting is further supported by our local collaborators, Food Science and Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT) and Department of Science Service (DSS), Thailand.
This half-day seminar discussed the status and challenges in food contact materials (FCMs), shared information on safety concerns and US FDA's regulatory approach for recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET), shared updates on FCMs regulations in SEA Region, provided insights on experience in using recycled PET and the migration testing for recycled PET.

Nanomaterials in Food - Prioritisation & Assessment
Nanomaterials have been of great economic interest and play an important role in providing sustainable solutions. Although they have been used as food additives for packaging in food manufacturing for a long while, the effect of nanomaterials on human health is currently of great concern. There us now a need for harmonized analytical and risk assessment methods. Thus, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) has started a 2-year project in 2017 focusing on nanomaterials in food under the European Food Risk Assessment Fellowship Programme (EU-FORA). The technical report, published in EFSA Journal, includes the description of the working programs, aims, different steps of risk assessment processes and improved knowledge regarding food processing, analytical and toxicological methods, and further training in risk assessment methodologies at ANSES. Intelligent Packaging in the Food Sector
Food packaging is no longer only used for food containment but also used to extend the shelf-life of food products and communicate information about the storage history, as well as the condition of the food products. Intelligent packaging allows monitoring of the quality status of a product and sharing of information with consumers and reduce food waste. In this review paper, three major types of different intelligent packaging technologies, data carriers, indicators and sensors, are discussed. For more details on this paper, please see HERE.

The Indonesia's National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has published new regulations for food packaging recently (Nomor 20 Tahun 2019 Kemasan Pangan). This revision covers both new and recycled materials, which include plastics (monolayer and multilayer), inks and dyes, elastomer, paper and paperboard, resins and polymer coatings, ceramics, and glass and metals. Food producers are required to ensure the packaging that they use does not endanger human health. This regulation includes the annexes of 1) prohibited substances; 2) permitted substances with a specific migration limit; 3) food contact materials and their total migration limits; and 4) specifications for materials used as packaging by food and beverage type. The regulation took effect from July 29, 2019.
