Happy New Decade!

Can't believe it's 20 years since the Millennium celebrations of the year 2000. Such big celebrations we had then - fireworks and parties.
Coleorton Millennium Garden 7 Sign
To mark the big event in Coleorton the 2000 Committee created the Millennium Garden and the Village Sign on a plot of land kindly donated by Joan Cull. The sign was designed and created by artist Isabell Lynam and includes the Beaumont family crest and motto.

There are 3 benches dedicated to local residents. Under the sign is buried a "Time capsule" with memories from pupils of Viscount Beaumont School.

However, time has taken its toll, and like all gardens it requires periodic refurbishment. So this year, with help and some funding from the Parish Council, the benches will be repaired and new brass commemorative plaques fitted and the hedges and shrubs given a good pruning. The garden area under the the sign will be completely replanted by a working party from the Heritage Group. We also hope to install an information board to tell visitors about Coleorton and its history. We'll keep you up to date with what's happening and let you know how you can help, maybe on the garden working party.

We look forward to a rejuvenated Millennium Garden which will celebrate Coleorton and its heritage for many more decades. More about the Millennium Garden >>

2019 round-up

As we look forward to the New Year its customary to look back at what we achieved in the last 12 months:

We had a busy year

In April we held a Quiz Night at The Kings Arms which proved very popular. Terry Ward kept us entertained with anecdotes and quips while doing duty as the question-master. Shaelyn deserves a medal for being a sounding board as Terry devised devious questions - and answers.

Also during April we held a guided History Walk around the south of Coleorton parish. In September, as part of the "Hello Heritage" festival organised by NW Leicestershire, we had two more walks, this time roughly following the Coleorton Heritage Trail. All the walks were well-attended - and several patient dogs were brought along too. The walks always seem to take longer than planned because there is much to talk about at every house or cottage passed and many questions and additional information forthcoming from walkers. More about Coleorton History Walks >>

Our Childhood in Coleorton Open day in October was brilliant.  Lots of local residents brought photos to share and delighted in identifying themselves and friends in the school photos. We made a lot of new friends and hope to include some of their stories on our website.

Following the launch of the Coleorton Blue Plaque scheme last year we have continued with erecting plaques on historically interesting buildings and sites and we have more in the pipeline.
If you know of a potential Blue Plaque site - a cottage, house maybe - with some history, please get in touch.

Each month we contribute an article to St Mary's Parish magazine - stories about events in the past, childhood memories and so on, This month the story is titled "Friday Night was Whitwick Night". One of our members remembers growing up as part of a mining family. Read this and other articles and publications >>

Apart from formal activities mentioned above we answer a lot of enquiries from people researching their family history or with former links to Coleorton. Sometimes this results in sharing photos and stories, and extends our knowledge of Coleorton past. Intriguing to find that someone you didn't know has the same photo in their family album as you have!  Some of our members get involved in research which often results in lively discussions about where a particular building (long gone) was located, who lived there and what it was called. For some reason the major topic of research seems to be pubs and ale-houses! Watch out for some interesting articles in 2020!

AGM

Our AGM is on Wednesday 22 January 7.00pm at the Beaumont Centre, Nottingham Road, Peggs Green. Please come along if you are interested in local history and would like to be involved with our group.
