Community Literacy Summit 2020: Ready to Read, Ready to Succeed
The 2020 Community Literacy Summit on Friday, February 28, 2020 will focus on the development of language and literacy skills in young children from birth to age five, specifically those that lead to kindergarten readiness and grade level reading success. The Summit is designed to bring about discussion and action around literacy readiness skills for young children in West Michigan.
The Summit will include a keynote speaker, two morning breakout sessions, facilitated networking, and a closing panel discussion during lunch. This year's keynote speaker will be Keisha Siriboe, Director of Content and Programming for the national Reading is Fundamental (RIF) organization.

MI Humanities: Poetry Out Loud Competition
Poetry Out Loud (POL) is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. By encouraging youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. The program and all materials are provided to each high school at no cost.
Participating high schools host their own competitions and select a student to represent their school at the state finals. Michigan’s POL State Finals will be held on March 13 and 14, 2020. You can read more about the 2018-19 State Finals and current champion, Tajah-Rayne Davise, in the Michigan Humanities news section. Each year, the state champion advances to the national finals in Washington, D.C. and competes for a $20,000 college scholarship.
Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of Michigan Humanities (MH), Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA), the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Additional support is generously provided by Meijer and the Liesel Litzenburger Meijer Fund.
Changing Practices for Changing Times: Moving Social Studies Forward
Michigan’s newly revised social studies standards are here. Combined with the skills provided by The C3 Framework’s Arc of Inquiry, an exciting opportunity exists to develop powerful teaching and learning in Michigan’s social studies classrooms.

ABA/FJC Summer Institute for Teachers -- Applications Open!
The ABA/FJC Summer Institute for Teachers is currently accepting applications for our 2020 Institute in Washington, DC (June 21-26). The Summer Institute deepens participants’ knowledge of the federal judiciary and of the role the federal courts have played in key public controversies that have defined our constitutional and other legal rights.
Participation is limited to 20 teachers. Travel, lodging, and meal expenses will be provided. Applications are due March 2, 2020. Applications can be found at www.ambar.org/summerinstitute

Next Educator Workshop: Bring it to the Table
Have you ever shied away from discussing an issue in your classroom because it was too controversial? Has a classroom conversation ever escalated to the point of being uncivil? Reserve your seat today for our next educator's training and learn how to guide students in open, honest, and civil discussions about "hot button" topics.
Led by filmmaker and civil discourse leader Julie Winokur, the workshop will begin with a screening of her film, Bring it to the Table. We will then participate in "table talk" exercises to learn ways to engage in civil discussion about contemporary issues.

High school students are invited to enter the 2020 President Gerald R. Ford Student Writing Challenge for a chance to win a $1,000 award. The winning student's teacher will also be awarded a $500 Meijer gift card for classroom supplies. This year's topic is determination. Entries are due March 13, 2020.
