Safety Hazard: Children Walking Home on Bear Island Parkway

At the request of Community Association Board member, Garrett Smith, and the volunteers on the Safety Committee and Neighborhood Watch, Association Management has been asked to provide parents with an urgent notice that children have been recently observed walking on Bear Island Parkway from their school bus stops at Appalachian Lane in the direction of Heritage Drive.  This behavior is extremely unsafe for the children involved and for all nearby traffic.

We ask all parents to advise your children that apart from crossing at intersections and using available crosswalks, they may not walk in the traffic lanes or shoulders of either Spring Creek or Bear Island Parkway at any time.  We ask that drivers who observe this sort of behavior slow down to near walking speed when passing children walking on any road in Spring Creek.  If possible, please use your flashers or headlights to warn nearby traffic.  If you feel it appropriate, please politely encourage the children to move to the paved walking path and away from the roadway.  If you know the children doing this or who have done this and how to contact their parents, please let those parents know.  Let's all work together to keep Spring Creek safe!

  • Spring clean-up and mulching of Woodland Park
  • Coordinated with the HOA to install new plantings at Woodland Park and around benches on Bear Island Parkway
  • Coordinated with the HOA and Advisory Council to personally welcome 57 new families to Spring Creek including a welcome gathering in March that was attended by 53 new residents
  • Provided seasonal decorations at the front and back gates
  • Set up U. S. flags around the front circle and gates for all holidays
  • Installed energy saving reflective film on windows of the Sports Club
  • With the cooperation of the Tavern, Pro Shop, and Spring Creek residents collected and loaded approximately 68,000 pounds of cardboard to be recycled by LCRC generating some $3,300 to support its operations
  • Coordinated several social activities for members including private tours of James Monroe’s home Highland, a gathering at Mt. Ida, and an annual holiday party
The next meeting of the Spring Creek Community Club is scheduled for 7:00 pm, January 7th in the Sports Club.  All meetings are open to all residents of Spring Creek.

Spring Creek Advisory Council

Two themes for this time of year. The first is “Thanks.” As the chair of the Advisory Council, I want to thank the community members who have given of their time to be part of your Advisory Council this year – Kathy Bellar, Jay Deinlein, Marvin Lichtenfels, Susan Howell, Pat Kight, Tosin Odomosu, Patsy Morehead,  Carla Reed, John Sanborn, Steve Spaulding, and Sharon Varney-Mathieu. I ask that we all say thanks to the many volunteers who give of their time to prepare the newsletter, to decorate the gate areas, to honor our country by putting out the flags, to keep our sports and fitness amenities safe and attractive for our residents and their guests, and to those who work to make our clubs and groups active parts of our community. If you know any of these folks, please tell them thanks for their efforts during the past year.

Our second theme is “safety.” Many of you have commented about the increased instances of speeding within our communities. We ask everyone to remember that the speed limit on our two parkways is 25 MPH. The limit on our neighborhood streets is 15 MPH. We also ask that you be careful driving in the area of the model homes where vehicles are sometimes parked and pedestrians are sometimes walking. There have been an increased number of reported instances where vehicles have not slowed or yielded to pedestrians in crosswalks. Especially this time of year, we ask that you allow pedestrians to be safely out of the road. Finally, there have been an increased number of times when drivers have rolled through stop signs entering the parkway. Please be careful entering the parkways. Finally, it is approaching that time of year when the chance of snow and ice increases be extra careful to look out for pedestrians and avoid parking in the street when snow removal is anticipated.
Happy New Year from your Advisory Council. Say thanks and be safe.
